    Diy house rewire

Wheelchair wheels 700 mm diameter, so the user often can't see the back of the wheel, so anything at 350 mm high is likely to get damaged by wheelchair users, so they need to be above or below that height. Wheelchairs with smaller wheels are not self-propelled, so less likely to cause damage...

How to do washing using off-peak?

I look at @Why Not Indeed graph, and wonder where my graphs are. I seem to remember only wash water heated, rinse water is not heated. To work out the area under the graph would not be easy, I think this is washing machine, then coffee before going to bed, but could have been dishwasher.

    Boiler modulation and balancing

I tried to use an aim at surface type of thermometer. It did not work, I have a differential thermometer, but I have lost the sensors, and with electronic TRV heads, I really don't need to measure, it shows target and current, and unless there is some other form of heating, current should...

    Extension cables and BS1363

The old Bakelite plug had a gap so you could have an earth wire without it coming out at the bottom. Today the earth strap does not connect direct to earth, it has a 1 Megohm resistance, just as well with a TN-C-S earth, as loss of PEN could be quite shocking. There is no need to allow on to...

Solar panels with no smart meter?

I charge overnight, but do not dump excess later. It seems some inverters are smart, and you can relinquish control to the energy provider, and they reward you by giving you special rates. But mine has an option to set it to do things at a set time, but the batteries are only just big enough...

Upgrade Ideal Logic+ Combi C35 controller to Ideal Combi Halo WiFi controller

Be interesting to hear how it goes, I went for Drayton Wiser, and will admit I was not sure which to go for, getting info on how they work is like getting blood from a stone. How to wire up, easy, yes, loads of diagrams and advice, as to how to link TRV heads, wall thermostats etc, not quite so...

Electric underfloor heating just stopped heating

I have multiway to measure current. These are the easy-to-use method, but these today also measure it, plus using my old multimeter I select an easy method, depending what I am working on. The red and black meter in the first picture has a NCV (non-contact voltage) option, this is handy to see...

The eternal question: Unvented cylinder or combi?

    1) I would not install a cylinder needing annual testing, I would go for open vented. 2) A combi-boiler able to supply 30 kW may not modulate as low as one providing 20 kW so getting a combi-boiler to satisfy shower requirements may be far too large for heating the house. Your house around the...

Electric underfloor heating just stopped heating

It's a get the meters out job. But first two types of electric under floor heating, simple resistive wire, and chemical. Looking at age, likely resistive wire type, the chemical was out back then, but when I wanted to fit it in a bathroom, found the chemical type did not have a built-in earth...

What fire rated downlights are you all fitting?

Not sure if that is true? Can one fit plastic bulbs and still comply with fire rating? As in the main, were designed to work with glass bulbs. You're not kidding, it does not list items and say what points will be awarded if upgraded, but lists then in sequence, so starts with floor insulation...

Cob, filament, and pearl LED lamps, watts to lumen, etc.

2 x carriage lamps on simple switch by front door, 4 x carriage lamps back door, flat doors, one lamp on a pole at pond, 1 bulkhead lamps, one on the shed, and one above path, so in all 9 lamps around 10 watt each around the house and drives, also some solar lights, a bit useless, only really...

Cob, filament, and pearl LED lamps, watts to lumen, etc.

Used cob lights in wife's bedroom as only bulbs I could find G9 which did not flicker or say on dimly, when using an Energenie smart light switch, as wanted a switch to work with a remote control when in bed. They work well, but are not legal as no watts or lumen marked on bulbs, so can only buy...

How to do washing using off-peak?

That was the problem, we do that when manually starting the wash, but when we set a delayed start, for some reason, it tumbles the clothes while waiting for start time, every so often. So the soap ends up on the clothes in concentrated form. Summer the difference between 8.5p and 15p, per kWh...

Cob, filament, and pearl LED lamps, watts to lumen, etc.

The filament LED I regarded as being for display, seen them in pubs, often need to take menu outside to read it as light so poor, and the cob LED reverse, it does not look very good, so in the main I fitted the pearl LED bulb which basic shines up from the base, and the cover defuses the light...
