    Smart Heating Advice

Only if no by-pass valve, in the main there will be a by-pass valve, so can have a TRV on all radiators. Position of radiators can change what is required, an outside wall will cool a radiator, and so mean a TRV connected to the radiator will show less than the real temperature of the room...

    Snow, schools, clearing, etc.

We post lady arrived, and another delivery service, so some things still running, but call it an academy or school, the government pays, so he who pays the piper calls the tune.

    Puzzling energy rating

I looked at the tumble drier, basic three types, vented, and two condenser types, air cooled and refrigeration type, there is water cooled, but normally only used as part of a washing machine. So to compare, we need to look at energy used to dry a set amount of clothing within a set time. The...

    Snow, schools, clearing, etc.

Colvid showed large schools don't work, and this light snow shows the same, schools need to be local.

    Snow, schools, clearing, etc.

OK, not standstill, but very much slowed down. I have only a dusting of snow, blown away with the leaf blower in a few minutes, but roads are deadly silent, not mail of any kind, no milk, and would not want anyone to take risks, so not worried about no milk etc. But salt works by when the snow...

    Snow, schools, clearing, etc.

This is the problem, we have a knock on effect, parents need to stay at home to look after children, so everything slows down due to lack of labour. Be it nurses, doctors, shop assistants, does not matter, whole country is brought to stand still because schools have closed.

2-gang light switch - how to make one circuit switch on the other?

Looking at IFTTT, or if this then that, many smart switches allow the use of IFTTT, but hard-wired, it would need a relay, or use of DC, had the same problem with central heating, with one boiler serving both main house and flat, and stopping back feeds.

    Drills needed please help

I was issued with battery drills, and they were well known makes, and seemed to last, the problem was, and still is, having a charged battery, I would organise the work around the drills, start the day drilling holes, put batteries on charge, and do other work, then once charged return to...

    Snow, schools, clearing, etc.

What a picture of Snowdon has to do with schools closing, I don't know, ask the BBC, but clearly snow is causing problems, just been out and blown it off my drive so safe for postman etc. Leaf blower does a great job. We expect post, milk, bins, etc, to be affected by the snow, but why would...

    Car leakage battery ?

I have two clamp-on meters, yellow one will not measure DC amps, red/black one will. I used these for years, there was a version to measure start amps as well, but can't find it any more. The problem with hard-wiring an ammeter, is any capacitor, can result in amps being drawn above the rating...

    Drills needed please help

I use Parkside (Lidi) because I also use batteries for garden tools, but at work not permitted to use any of my own tools, the firm's insurance requires the firm have control of tool quality, so not permitted to use any of my tools at work. I do use them, as there are never enough, available...

Minium room temperature, is there a limit?

I am leaving the door open to the kitchen, so tumble drier nearer to the door than the sensor, so it is a bit warmer, but until I put the sensor there had no idea the room was so cold.

    Smart meter home display question

I use the PMR 466 walkie-talkies as wife not licensed, in Shotton, house in elevated position, 8 miles from Chester, on the flat going alongside the river, got around a 4-mile range. A bit lower frequency with the railway, using a repeater on the hill between the two main stations, can just...

    Car leakage battery ?

Test charge rate not so easy today, old days 13.8 to 14.8 volts, depending on type of vehicle, showed charging OK, but with stop/start technology not that simple. But in other ways easier, if the car engine is stopping at junctions, then clearly the engine management thinks it's charging OK...

    Replace landing light fixture. Wiring.

In the main, I use these and replace the block connector inside the lamp, so have 4 connector blocks, not 3. The other method is to use a lighting junction box before the wire goes into the lamp. If not accessible latter there are maintenance free versions in both cases there is some strain...

    Smart meter home display question

Yes, very well put, I can read what I am using with the solar panel app, so not really interested in the pink unit. Links to how it works have already been posted, and no, the IHD connects direct to the smart meter. The pink unit is an Octopus special. There were IHD before the smart meters...

    Car leakage battery ?

Do you know my wife? That's her all over, come and get these, and I have not a clue what these are. My meter will test DC current down to 1 mA, but to test DC it needs to be zero'ed, and that is only any good if the meter is not moved after being zero'ed, so not that accurate. These also work...

Have you seen how Japan does grounding of appliances?

We have the same and Europe even more, we used to use two pins a lot in grandfathers day, and I have worked on a Robin tunnel boring machine with a delta set down transformer outlet, so no neutral for anything to be bonded to. The DC cranes in the steel works had two bulbs in series, with...
