    flying ladders

Many moons ago I wasdriving along a German Autobahn behind a US military convoy - jeep at the front, 7 or 8 large trucks, then a pickup bringing up the rear. All trundling along at 40mph in the righthand lane. As I came up nearly level with the pickup in the left lane, it went over a bump in...

    Powermax 185 problems

Be careful what you wish for! In many situations, there are very few viable alternatives! (In fact, if you're in an apartment with a long distance from the boiler to an outside wall and the flues are in a ceiling void, putting in anything different could be VERY disruptive.)

    argi

The new site IS working pretty well and there are a lot of people already on there. The form-filling is not really a problem and I'm assured the archive data is safe.

    Baxi model identification

Come on - face the facts! It's a piece of inefficient junk! OK - a faithful and reliable piece of junk so far. But JUNK!

    boiler siting dilemma

Boilers in bathrooms are generally a Bad Idea. Manufacturer's instructions will specify what's allowed, usually including reference to the various 'Zones' mentioned in the electricity wiring regs. There's not usually any problem with a boiler in a permitted zone, inside a housing of some sort...

    open vented steamer

I think you're a little Behind the Ball on the F4 / electronics problem on Vitodens 100 (unless you're referring to a DIFFERENT, RECENT issue with the same symptoms..). AIUI, this problem was jumped on VERY effectively by Viessmann in UK, so that ALL affected boilers should have had PCB...

Wire out of back of thermostat control

Can you walk off a job???

If you've badly messed up your relationship with 'the workers' then you need to prepare to see them go! With no real contract and (apparently) no obvious problem with the QUALITY of work done, you've put yourself in a very weak position. Step back and look objectively. You've agreed...

    Cast Iron Bath/Limestone Tiles

I think you'd need to be very confident about the quality of limestone tiles with a CI bath sitting on them. Point is that the metal feet can create 'point loads' with a very small area of contact between the foot and relatively-soft / brittle tile. If the 'pad' on the bottom of each 'claw'...

    Cleaners that strip chrome

Nooooo!!! Drain cleaner is often SULPHURIC acid - which is definitely not a good idea. Hydrochloric acid in quite a concentrated form is easily available from any decent hardware store, as 'Spirits of Salts'. No idea why in these safety-obsessed times, but it is! I very much doubt whether...

    Treating Hard Water

Once, I took the view that magnetic fields applied to water were unlikely to do much of anything to it, so were not going to act as 'softeners'. Then boiler manufacturers started to demand 'scale reducers' fitted to their boilers, so I fitted them. Then it was pointed out that there are...

    Baxi Combi 80HE plus

Oh dear- the fog rolls in! According to my docs for Baxi 80HE plus, the controls are arranged with a Reset button (left) and temperature control knob/ on/off (right) above 3 lights: Red lockout (left) Green burner on (centre) and Green mains on (right). Assuming the light codes are the same...

    Hudson Reed thermostatic shower valve

If it has 3 handles (on/off, temperature, diverter bath/shower) all in a line but in fact screwed together, be EXTREMELY careful that the joints between the 'modules' are actually water-tight. There is a model of this description which has threaded sections with a machined groove cut into the...

Converting gravity feed HW to pumped: Where to put the pump.

Should have made clear that the objective was to take heat OUT of the DHW cylinder and INTO the boiler and pipework. Unless you have a REALLY large and old boiler with a VERY large water capacity, I don't see that you'll actually lose much heat that route. And what happens on a REALLY hot day...

Converting gravity feed HW to pumped: Where to put the pump.

Your system is VERY dodgy!!! What happens when the solar panels freeze? (If you're trying to dump heat INTO the DHW, the panels are presumably on the same water circuit as the boiler.) It sounds as if you need a major rework of the whole thing to make it safe, let alone serviceable!

Air/gurgling noises in airing cupboard pipework

I sort-of assumed that you'd already had bits of the system apart. If the pump unions are showing leakage deposits on the outside, they're definitely worth a look. In particular, you may find there are FIBRE washers on the 1.5" loose unions connecting onto the pump body. Some pump...

    Interesting pic [1]

Yeah - right! Replumb ALL the basins, sinks and WCs in a building with HepVOs and also air-admittance valves where required, so as to get rid of some existing, serviceable pipework on the outside. Yup - external pipework is UGLY and lots of it is usually uglier - but there's no way on the...

    Powerflush and magnaclean filter

On an old, neglected system with no inhibitor chemical in the water, SOME sludge is (depresssingly) normal. How much sludge did you mean by 'all this'? If it was less than a dessert spoonful, and black rather than brown, I'm unimpressed! Whether you decide a flush is worthwhile depends...

Air/gurgling noises in airing cupboard pipework

By this time, air trapped in the system SHOULD have found its way out via the open vent, especially if (as you suggest) it's circulating in the hot pipework connected to the cylinder. Are you SURE there are no air leaks (INTO) the system. Favourite places for these are pump valves - the stem...
