    Holiday - Boiler Mate

If it's summer and you don't mind no hot water immediately available when you get back, probably best to turn off the whole system at the programmer or, failing that, the main heating on/off switch (usually near the boiler. There's no benefit at all turning the boiler half-way down: the way...

    3 port valve

When you say rads get 'warm' do you mean all of them? some? one? and warm or hot? Do you think the valve is actually 'deliberately' turning on to heating, or just leaking a bit? Also, is this a Honeywell 4073 valve, or something else?

    Potterton Suprima 60 Problem

AFAIR, the flame sense is done via the HT wire. Probably worth checking for good connections in four places: - where the HT wire connects to the electrode, - other end, where it connects to the PCB, - the earth tag connection on the botom of the burner assy, - the other end of the earth...

    Sucking AIR

Mr Honeywell gets VERY cross if his valves are mounted in such a way that water leaking out of the valve connections or (heaven forbid!) the shaft seal on the valve itself, can run down into the actuator. (Unfortunately, actuators of this type are NOT even slightly water-resistant.)

    Potterton Suprima 60 Problem

OP said it was a 'hot fault'. What leads you to flame rectification??? If it lights OK from cold then shows symptoms of overheating when demand is nearly satisfied (hot water and rads warmed up and thermostats about to turn off), this sounds very much like EITHER the overheat sensor in the...

The Impossible Leaking Tap: Replacement Valves?

Looks like you've been kippered somewhere along the way! The rectangular drive peg on the base of the bit of tap you've unscrewed SHOULD engage with a disc module which fits onto that plated metal bit with the small lugs on it. So where's it gone??? The water will just run straight through...

    Sucking AIR

I misread the diagram - the valve you asked about is presumably a 'fixed bypass' and needs to be slightly open. I agree with Dan: if you have a mains-pressure hot water cylinder (ie. an 'unvented' type) you MUST have a spring-return zone valve on the hot Flow to it from the boiler. This is a...

    Copper pipe corrosion.

For pipes to pinhole after such a short time, it's virtually certain to be from the inside outwards. Flux left inside after installation is VERY likely to be the cause. Duff pipe (with carbon deposits left inside at manufacture) can also fail quickly but because this problem is well-known...

    Sucking AIR

That valve MAY be put there to regulate the flow through the coil of the hot water cylinder (assuming that's the valve you meant). You don't show any controls or motorised valves on your diagram. Are there any? Or is it a 'gravity' hot water system? If so the diagram is a bit wrong - the pump...

    Vitiated boiler?

Try again, bypassing the word-fight :) .... Vitiation I take to mean 'combustion air deficient in oxygen'. Usually, this is due to flue problems causing recirculation of flue gases into the intake, so that there is indeed too little oxygen. Was that the problem in this case??

    Valve or Actuator at fault?

    - reliability of motorised valves is (overall) not bad - reliability of the motors in the actuators is disgraceful! - it's usually worth replacing (if possible) the motor in an actuator when it fails and everything else looks in good condition. - it's hardly ever worth replacing the whole...

New heating fit and Part L Regs Hellllllllp!

AlanE is right on the money! The objective of Part L is to SAVE energy. If a TRV on any radiator helps do this, then Part L should be happy! At the same time, if the system isn't broken / inadequate, it doesn't need fixing! A room stat in the hall MAY be unduly influenced by the cold air...

    Ideal Mexico HE

Any more 'war stories' about Mexico HEs? A customer of mine REALLY wants one (to replace a clapped-out floor-mount heat only SE boiler) but I've got doubts and no direct experience of the Mex HE.

Central heating upgrade - flush or not to flush

What's not been mentioned yet is that the pipework at the lowest parts of the system (ie. under the Ground floorboards) will probably contain some or lots of sludge. If you can arrange to disconnect pipes in that area (and having made sure there are no opens anywhere else!), you can flush the...

    Potterton Suprima 60 Problem

Maybe if you call Potty and whisper 'BBC Watchdog!' in the right ear-hole, you MIGHT be able to blag a free replacement PCB..... or not. Try, anyway.

    Vitiated boiler?

Hang on! We haven't yet been told why it was vitiated.....

Gas purge required after property left empty

Obviously (?), the area of any interface between the different gas mixtures (atmosphere, with negligible CH3, and inside pipe, initially with 100% CH3) makes a helluva difference to the diffusion rate due to differing partial pressures. If we're talking tiny, tiny holes, the rate of diffusion...

Silly me! I'd forgotten that partial pressures related to absolute pressure, not relative. Doh!

Automatic Bypass Valve Setting For Smart Pump

Sorry - the only electronic-control pumps I use are Grundfos Alpha and Magna. No docs for Wilo ?? Smart 25/6-30 that I can find so no information how far 'smartness' goes. Is it just constant-pressure? or what?
