    Rendering a fireplace

Glad to see the jobs coming along Mike. I rendered mine initially. If I remember right filling the deep bits first so it was roughly flat, then a skim about 1/2 inch, 5:1 ratio with plastersizer. BUT! I did get some cracks in it, I think due to the brick work drying and salts building up, some...

    Loft conversion........sort of

I used steel beams, yes, parallel to purlins. The section of these has to be calulated to take the load. Yes, mine are on to the party wall at side and Gable wall at the other. Loading on just 4 points is normally OK, with a pad stone ie. engineering brick transferring the load to the wall...

loft insulation advice for loft converstion ??

It can depend on your existing ceilings and what is required by Building Regs for fire proofing. I've got lath and plaster ceilings and had to improve the fire resistance to all the ceilings. To acheive 1/2 hr rating I fitted 100mm rockwool flexi slab between the ceiling rafters, suspended on...

Multifuel stove central heating sytem. HELP

Oilman, I'm currently making DG sliding sashes and I can see the condensation becoming a problem for me. Instead of puddle on the window ledges, I'll have damp forming behind wadrobes etc. I can see my next project being HVAC (I think) with a heat exchanger. Oh well it'll keep me busy.

Multifuel stove central heating sytem. HELP

Have you considered just running the fire with your internal doors open. Even over the last few really cold days we have been running our wood burner (not at full 7.5kw output) to heat our 5 bed victorian house 9ft ceilings etc. Maintaining 18 degrees in the coldest bed room. Just an idea for...

    Replace Cast Iron Guttering?

If the problem is the gutter leaking, just fix the gutter. The timber won't then get wet and won't rot. This option will save you loads of cash and retain aesthetics. Appolgies if you like the look of plastic.

    DIY Loft Conversion

Hi Andrew, Yes that's me turning newel. It sounds like you've had many extra bits to do. Hope it all works out in time for Christmas. There nothing like a deadline to get things finished. I set christmas last year as deadline to get the room finished and I've not set another, as a result the...

Diamond core cutter not cutting very fast

I know the problem well. The problem comes because the dimond segments are glazing over in the harder material. You will find drilling through the breeze block (which is very abrasive) wears away the metal matrix that hold the diamond, exposing fresh diamonds to do the cutting (you can feel...

    Opening up a fireplace

We have a similar opening in our house, we found an iron band under the arch when we opened it up. If the arch is sound you shouldn't need a lintel. We made a feature of the arch, and last year finally got the wood burner in. I'm sure you'll be looking the right linner spec for solid...

    DIY Loft Conversion

I hope I've got the terminology right - The ZE on the TNS was too high for my electrician to pass. So I could have fitted an earth rod, it would have been quicker, but as the earth was supposed to be supplied by the network, I pursued them. I did give them the choice of digging the road up and...

mice invasion - what to do?

Combine the peanuts and mars bar.. could call it a marathon, or am I too old. Rat need bigger traps, they are available but they are clever so you might need to vary the bait. Check the traps twice a day and when you think you've got them all still leave a few traps about. And find out...

    DIY Loft Conversion

Hi Steve, I needed to gain as much head height as I could, the joists are only 100mm. The hanger I doubled up welded together then welded to the beam. Unconventional but effective. Andy
