    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

Thanks again for the replies. I am sure about the multimeter setting 200k. It was something I noticed and was not doing any specific tests. I have disconnected all appliances and sockets and traced all the wiring to their coressponding sockets. I am 100% sure I have not missed anything. I...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

I have decided (unless there is a better option) to run a length of MMT2 to incorporate 2.5mm twin and earth six inches below the underside of the worktop and position 2 double sockets for the washing machine and dryer and the electric oven and hob ignition. I was hoping to save the tiles above...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

The damaged section is all but one from the consumer unit so no way a equal divide. The ring covers the kitchen and dining so about 50% of the ground floor. There is another cable which I can see alongside the faulty one which routes to the kitchen's oppsoite wall socket. It too is also partly...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

Thanks TomH93, The socket has 2 twin and earth cables 6 wires in total. The other end of the cable the socket has again 2 twin and earth cables 6 wires in total. The damage is probably somewhere inbetween under the floor. Let me know if I can add anything further.

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

Thanks TomH93 too for helping me. Everything is unplugged and as of yesterday all sockets have been removed too. Here is what I've done and found. I removed both live wires from the breaker and both neutral and earth wires. Then removed all the sockets from the walls and removed the sockets...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

I am so grateful for the replies. I think I may be over thinking this so have decided today to remove the floor units and ALL sockets. I'll expose all the wires and check eack one at a time. I will then have proper and clear information to post here otherwise I'm affraid of wasting everyones...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

Thanks bernardgreen. I was initially checking earth continuity before turning the power back on after cleaning up all the wires. When by accident more than any particular reason I noticed that when I probed the live and neutral the multimeter showed 35.2 ohms when set on 200K I thought it best...

    Anyone have any ideas?? Please!

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

Sorry for the delay... I was sure my fingers were not touching any wires. I measured between the red and black at both sockets. Weird thing is the wires are all disconnected. Red and black readings started at about 35.2 ohms and rising. Red and earth started at 55.0 rising and black and earth...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

I connected it up today and the breaker did not trip. I am very worried about those high resistance readings especially as all the six wires were disconnected and yet there was a reading. I can only imagine that some corrosion is to blame. Should I arrange to have this section of cable changed...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

All done now BUT to cut a long story very short I was almost ready to test the circuit when I noticed that when my multimeter was set on 200k the ring main in question was reading 35.2 rising to around 60.4. I have no idead what this meant but the other ring main reads 0.0. I knew instantly that...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

Many thanks Dave & Bernard, ok, I'll change the metal back box for good measure and refit everything. Fingers crossed it won't trip the breaker again. If it does then I suppose I'll have to get the entire cable changed. If there is anything else I can check or do then please let me know...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

Thanks Bernard, Yep, about 3years ago I had a leak in the underground drains which was sorted. The area affected was 15 away under the screeded floor. When I removed the front plate the metal box had small areas of rust covering about 30%. The skirting board came off but was not rotted...

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

I've cleaned up the earth wire and was wondering how the earth wire shorted with the live. Other than the blue stuff and blackened earth wire there are no other tell tell signs. I am sureish that the pop sound came from behind the socket but can't see any tell tale signs.

    Copper Sulfide on Earth Wire

A months back the a breaker on my consumer unit tripped. I flipped the breaker back and approx 20mins later I heard a pop sound from a socket. I removed the faceplate and could see the earth wire was blackened and a fair amount of blue dust around the earth wire at the point where the white...

    Moffat Oven

OK. I,ve had the world of problems with Electrolux ordering parts online. Anyway, fitted the new top element and hey presto the neon light is off ( finally ) . Replaced the bottom one also ( suppose I didn't need to ) to be sure. So, I am grateful to Bunerman and CaptainCaveman1...

I was thinking the same thing Burnerman. I'll go ahead and order the lower element too and hopefully that will be that. I will keep you posted once the parts are fitted. Many many thanks again

    Moffat Oven

Many thanks to Bunerman and Captaincaveman1 for all the helpful advice. I have decided to buy the upper element today and hope for the best. Do you think the ohms readings reflect a failing element. I only ask as the bottom element may also be on the way out. I set my multimeter to...

Thanks again, It looks to me that that neon indicator is wired in series to the top element. I think the megger meter may be a step too far for me as my prognosis involves a landfill  Top elements run at about £35.00 + P&P and £10.50 + P&P for genuine parts. Since I haven't...
