    Household tips and DIY waste

Came in by us recently too. Our local council now charge something like £3 for a bag of rubble or a single piece like a sink , £4 for a bag or sheet of plasterboard and £4 for a tyre. I can see the logic in charging for tipping , councils having less money to spend and trying to get us to dump...

Can you remove and restore old/period coving?

Thanks , I had a look at that link and see that he used to work for Trumpers which is where I recognise him from , easier to see in some of the other photos without his hat on.

Can you remove and restore old/period coving?

Gerry where did you find those photos? Guy in the first photo looks very familiar , perhaps we've been on a site together?

    Europeans thank Tory Britain

Perhaps the playing field could be levelled a bit and privatise the road network ,and charge tax on aircraft fuel too.

Can you remove and restore old/period coving?

You could always try to remove it , a vertical cut around every meter and then try to work an old saw in where it meets the ceiling and wall. Without doubt you'll cause some damage and you'll also need someone to support it while you're attempting it. Dependant on the size there could be lathes...

What do I do with this staircase?

That's just how it looked in the second picture albeit both above and below were shades of grey. To be honest the father in law was impressed and understood the idea was to get something that looked consummate and sympathetic with the age of the property but my other half and sister in law...

240 or 110v when working on domestic property

Sounds very much like my own position around six years ago , most tools I used belonged to a now defunct building firm and a while after that what few 110v tools I had were stolen. To be honest I then brought some new to replace what I'd lost and went for 240 v seeing as I work just on domestic...

What do I do with this staircase?

Funny you should say clinical , as I said I've redecorated my own hall stairs and landing in grey , actually a light grey above a darker shade separated by a black dado line and when my sister in law came round she said it looked like a doctors waiting room! Remedied now by replacing the line...

Gloss, Matt or other finish for Front Door/Pipework

In the twentieth century I'd agree gloss has been the norm and post war brilliant white gloss must be the most common. Prior to that less glossy surfaces seem to be the order of the day which is probably down to developments in the paint rather than any personal choices or fashions. I've spent...

    Drones or quadcopters

Ack ack I'd have thought. With reference to an earlier comment I'd have thought the deciding factor in using drones to deliver parcels isn't the relative sizes of the drone or package but the availability of potential "landing sites" . Another thing I don't quite understand is exactly how...

What do I do with this staircase?

Nice everything coordinating even the furniture but strangely missing the couple of boxes of tools that live in my hallway most nights

What do I do with this staircase?

Thanks for putting that picture up Robbie , just what I had in my mind , very contemporary at the moment. I notice in the picture that the wall behind is grey which also seems to be very much in vogue too. Did you do that as well? I've decorated a couple of jobs in grey and have recently done my...

    Epilepsy and depression

My partner had grand mal seizures so there was no mistaking what they were but your experience does seem to show how completely lacking in understanding or perhaps compassion some people are.

    Epilepsy and depression

My former partner wouldn't have agreed , absolutely no taste for decent music. As I said she would suffer an incident monthly which to us seemed to tie in with the usual female cycles although the doctors disagreed with that . Before any incident it would increase her libido which would then be...

What do I do with this staircase?

To be honest it looks like the stairs could still do with a lot more preparation . It could just be the photo but it looks as if they are covered with (what looks like badly applied) wood stain of some kind. It really needs a good sanding down for starters. However , from the photo it looks...

    Epilepsy and depression

I'm not a sufferer of either myself personally although I have had a partner who suffered from epilepsy bad enough to warrant a stay in the David Lewis centre . The condition was controlled up to a point with the drugs but would generally culminate in a fit each month. Despite that depression...

10 x 2 joist centres for flat roof

Oh yes , you're right , mental arithmetic gone to pot there. I do normally work in inches and seeing as the OP used just metric I thought I'd better do the same but obviously should have checked with the tape

10 x 2 joist centres for flat roof

I'd personally put them in at 450mm (or 16"in old money) . The wider spans may very well be ok for the plasterboard but if it were to start to sag and bow it would be a lot more work to rectify it later whereas the cost of sticking a few extra joists in at this stage would soon be forgotten about.

Practising hanging a door and doing skirting?

There isn't really a right or wrong answer to that one , it's more what you feel comfortable with. I've used the wedge that J&K has shown , I've wedged a door on the sawbench (and much rarely a workmate , simply because they were rare on the sites I worked on) but I have also just pushed a door...
