Practising hanging a door and doing skirting?

A lot of the work I did at college was making doors and later in the apprenticeship we got to actually hanging doors. A studded "room" was permanently erected in one workshop and we would fit frames or linings and then the doors. Once hung they were then hung again with the hinges on the former...

    Cutting slot for mortice lock

Ideal tool is a swan neck chisel , says I smugly knowing there's one in the workshop. Old one that I picked up at a market for around £15 . Not something that gets carried around that much but useful for when I know I'm going to need one.

    Cutting slot for mortice lock

Chiselling is the way to go . As you say the longer chisels are expensive and probably not worth the expense if you aren't going to need one again. Some time ago I needed a long chisel and not having one at the time sharpened up a metal gutter bracket. Obviously it didn't stay sharp anywhere...

How much do handymen usually charge and what's a good name?

I trade using my own name rather than anything like south coast handyman and it hasn't done me any harm. My "corporate image " could probably be better , some of my jeans and tops are patched and the van could do with a tidy. I used to have magnetic signs but nowadays don't advertise as all of...

    Tools for a treehouse

Well I'd say a small hand axe at least . Trees are , well , very rarely nice and square and an axe makes adjusting timber to fit branches etc a relatively easy job. Plus I'm surprised no one has suggested a bog standard hand saw . Power tools are great ,and I'd agree with the suggestions made...

    Mice in the pub?

I've had more success with a trap that catches them live. However , the trap needs to be checked probably more than once a day as a mouse will very quickly die in one . As I understand it's something to do with having a fast metabolism so they will die of starvation or dehydration quite soon. If...

    TRUMP SET TO WIN!!!!!!!

Hardly a black swan event really so I'm not really shocked or surprised. I'm beginning to wonder if the democrats wanted to lose this election , well to be more precise if both parties didn't want to win. The economy has been failing and in the doldrums for a while now and to put forward...

Are there really people this uneducated in this Country?

I've picked up any dropped coins since I was a kid and will continue to do so. Over the years I've picked up quite a bit of cash and other things too. Years ago I would pick up cigarette cards that could be exchanged for stuff ( Embassy if I recall) and in the mid eighties Cadbury did a wrapper...

Are there really people this uneducated in this Country?

Methodology has certainly changed and that was brought home to me when my daughter was at primary school and asked me to check her maths homework. The method I was taught for multiplication and division seemed to me simple and logical but the "chunking" method she had learned seemed ok for...

Are there really people this uneducated in this Country?

I did pretty decently in my O levels all those years ago , multiple equations , differnenciation , algreba did it all in my stride without problems. Since leaving school I haven't had the need to actually use any of that and am sure I'd struggle and now my daughter has started at senior school...

    Wooden garage door

Go for shuttering ply , cheap and resistant. I've had untreated pieces outside for years and while it has discoloured it hasn't delaminated or failed and I've had treated stuff on sheds for decades that is still as good as new.

    Wooden upstand

Sounds as if your walls aren't flat or straight or your timber is perhaps twisted. You may need to remove a bit of material from the back of the timber , power plane is good for that , to allow it to touch more of the wall. Fit it dry first and you'll be able to see where it rocks , that's where...

Poll: Who should be the next leader of the free world?

As I haven't voted because I'm frankly not sure that either of them SHOULD be the next president , although I would have voted if it had said WILL , perhaps someone could tell me the result of the poll so far.

    Bloody Brexit

Not many months ago TPTB were in Paris talking about how we need to limit emissions and decarbonise but now those same people are talking about increasing trade , something that has been closely related to energy consumption in the past . The hypocrisy of those in power is truly frustrating.

Users of caulk/ silicone cartridges - help please!

I just keep a spare nozzle and swap it over when I need to . The set silicon in the original tube is easy to pull out to reuse the next time . No fuss and rarely more than a nozzle full gets wasted ( and half of that has set anyway) .

Poll: Who should be the next leader of the free world?

Should - Bernie Sanders Will - Trump and even though I think Trump is going to fail on many of his campaign promises he's still probably a better bet than Clinton , for a start he wants to work with the Russians rather than antagonising them as Clinton does.

    Farage Resigns

A short while ago my father in law , who is a UKIP member , passed on to us an email petition for just that. I don't think he saw it as hypocrisy that ukip railed against "unelected" European officials but want someone who is unelected to the British Parliament to take part in future negotiations .

    Buy now while stocks last

It must be "obvious" that any bucket can become full or overflow . Some believe the bucket is already full but just for clarity how many people would need to live in this country for you to believe we are full , 70 million? 100 million? 200 million?
