Adding to a full Consumer unit

Apologies - if something is in a for reference thread (especially one that has been 'stickified') should the moderators not ensure it is generally accepted as sound advice? Lets face it - it will be the first thread checked when visiting here for the first time and I imagine a lot of queries...

Adding to a full Consumer unit

There's a good post in this thread http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7553 by Plugwash about adding a shower CU to your mains CU if this is of any help?

    Socket Wiring behind skirting boards

Lightswitch Wiring Help - 3 gang to 2 gang

The guy seemed to think that everything done in the kitchen recently was fine (albeit that the CU end of all that he recommended be put onto one split load CU). I don't intend of changing anything in the kitchen that does not require it as I have effectively already paid for this recently...

breezer - that makes sense. Presumably it wouldn't be outside of regs to have specific sockets changed for RCD sockets if this was easier. I tend to power all garden tools/pressure washer etc using a RCD adaptor in the socket in the garage so presumably this is still okay?

Lightswitch Wiring Help - 3 gang to 2 gang

Am I right in thinking that you have the high current stuff on the RCD side i.e. immersion, electric shower, cooker and the lights and sockets on the non RCD side? How many spare ways would you suggest to allow for future expansion? 2 on each?

Lightswitch Wiring Help - 3 gang to 2 gang

Okay - the initial view is a complete lighting rewire, new split load consumer board desirable but not essential, upgrade earthing on sockets and upgrade earth bonding in a few areas - I've asked the guy for pricing on all the 'essentials' and then additional cost for desirables. I'll then use...

No problem - I appreciate all the advice given to be honest (even if you old hands used abbreviations I haven't heard of!) - thanks again

Lightswitch Wiring Help - 3 gang to 2 gang

Don't worry - got there in the end  I suspect the recommendation will be a full rewire, and to be honest with our first nipper on the way I'd rather get it done now than later. I wish the bathroom and kitchen people had of been honest and said that the electrics needed sorting...

secure - is a 'rec' a Regional Electric Company.......i.e. in my case Southern Electric (or Scottish & Southern Electric if that's what they are called now)? Anyway - just been on the NICEIC website and found a registered firm down the road from me so they are going to come and formally...

Lightswitch Wiring Help - 3 gang to 2 gang

Thanks for your candour, it is appreciated. Considering that there are only 3 sockets and 2 lights downstairs on the old CU and 3 sockets and 5 lights upstairs it might not be a huge job [he says in the hope of the cost not being too high!]. I'll take a couple of pics this evening so you can...

Lightswitch Wiring Help - 3 gang to 2 gang

Have saved all the pics and instructions from that post breezer. The survey on the house (and the electrician who was appointed by the people who did our kitchen) said that although the CU is not completely up to date (no circuit breakers/trips - just big pull out fuses) the wiring from the...

Lightswitch Wiring Help - 3 gang to 2 gang

 Now the only 'old' lighting downstairs is the hall and lounge lights (the kitchen/diner is on a new separate circuit) is this a potential DIY job? I could do with learning how and would also like to be able to plaster so making any new channels would be a way of easing me in to that...
