    US to UK 'transformer'

I forgot to mention my wife is Malaysian ;). She can't go very long without rice. The benefits apply to us and the convenience is well appreciated. Of course more primitive/traditional methods are acceptable, but why shouldn't anyone use technology to improve their quality of life? It is no...

    US to UK 'transformer'

Well, You turn them on and forget about them until you want to serve. No watching a pan come to the boil, monitoring it simmer etc. Perfect results every time despite lack of required intervention. Impossible to burn base. Never end up with a mass of sticky stodge. Easy to clean. Can keep...

Oh for heaven's sake! Didn't think it was needed, but post above edited for clarity

    US to UK 'transformer'

Hi folks, Wife has her eyes on the Rolls Royce of electric rice cookers - more functions than grains of rice in the world  :) , but it's only available in the US. Rated at 700W. I've shown her the size/cost/appearance of a suitable step-down transformer and said pretty much forget...

    Floodlighting a tree

It may be a weak argument in some contexts, but the OP is using it in the context of illuminating a tree FFS!! Not justiying paedophilia, genocide, or any other stupid analogy you can come up with. There are many perfectly legitimate reasons for wanting to illuminate a tree or anything else for...

    Floodlighting a tree

[quite obvious mocking sarcasm] A good point well made, BAS - as he's clearly morally reprehensible (for even considering illuminating a tree for special occasions), his position would undoubtedly be 'If I don't do it someone else will'. It stands to reason. You're quite right to liken him to a...

    Compulsary testing

Pointing out what the legal requirements are and stressing the importance of working to a high standard, including testing, is more than sufficient. Ultimately everyone here is an adult and is entitled to decide for themselves to what extent they will heed advice and follow regulations/obey the...

    Floodlighting a tree

  Perhaps he just means he's being employed to illuminate a tree, and that if he doesn't, he'll loose the work to someone else (rather than the employer realising the error of their wasteful ways and deciding not to get it done).

    Outdoor socket advice

So the battens on this wall are so close together that a socket fits inbetween and no room for the FCU beside it? It could always go above or below - that's an option. Or if it was to go on the other side of the nearest batten, if you cut the hole in the plasterboard for the dry lining box very...

    Non latching pull switch wanted

I still think BAS' idea of a humidistat would be much better - then you're not relying on your family members remembering to pull the fan cord every time they use the bathroom. There's an xpelair one designed specifically to be used with your fan (you mention the DX100T in that other thread)...

    Outdoor socket advice

What's wrong with an FCU in sight? We're talking something like this... Not something like this... With it inside, make it a double pole FCU and you can easily isolate the external installation if, say, a fault occurs (eg water ingress) that trips the RCD on your socket circuit and...

    HEAT DETECTOR

You're right - normal cooking will never get the air temperature at the ceiling up to 55-odd degrees to nuissance trip a heat alarm even directly above the cooker. Well, unless you really like to flambé a lot. A nice waft of hot air when you open your oven maybe could though? That's certainly...

Extractor fan - override delay circuit?

Presumably you could just disconnect the permanent live so it only has switched live. Do it safely, ideally at the spur point of the supply to the fan or at the 3-pole isolator rather than just disconnecting at the fan and having a live bare wire end flapping around made 'safe' with insulation tape.

    I'm competent!

At the time of submitting my building notice (not just including the electrical work) I was intending to follow the path described in Doc P of notification followed by the LABC inspecting and testing. At the time I naively assumed that would be fine, and it was only later I discovered my LABC...

disgruntled customer or taking the 'P'

I can't believe the home owner is even entertaining the notion that it could be your fault! The builder and his spark mate must have either spun a fantastic fairy story, or been downright intimidating!

    I'm competent!

Woo hoo! Just thought I'd share the joy. I finally have it in writing that my LABC will allow me to issue my own EIC for my DIY rewire (on my renovation building notice). They just require a copy of my leccy engineering degree cert. So a DIY full rewire soon to be the subject of a shiny...

    Wiring horizontally in a kitchen?

In fact, if you were to wire those sockets as per your second diagram, that would be against the regs, as unless there were sockets/accessories along that low horizontal cable run, then that would be outside the safe zones. That of course assumes that cable wouldn't be burried more than 50mm...

    Electricians "guiding" DIY installation work

Here? Or maybe the reason they're not on here is that they're too busy spending time on their yachts. :)
