    Extension to Increase Garage Size

Thanks for that - might go for cutting a block shorter on one side rather than inserting a cut piece on the other - as I only need a couple of feet extra space inside the garage and still have to fit the caravan behind it! Will dig the trench out to 450 and see if I hit solid ground.

    Extension to Increase Garage Size

Was looking at this again today, having marked out where the trench is going. The block corners are square and the blocks are square to the walls either side of the opening. As can be seen in the pic it looks like wall on one side is approx 70mm out of alignment with the other side. Just...

    Extension to Increase Garage Size

Just looks like that as the blocks I've laid out don't meet up. I haven't measured anything yet and just laid them down roughly to get an idea of size, hopefully all is ok

    Extension to Increase Garage Size

Thanks. I have proper concrete blocks to use, just used those ones to mark it out. Can I use the thermalites further up the wall? It appears that one side of the original door opening might be further back than the other side. What's the best way to deal with that? Cut blocks shorter on one side?

    Extension to Increase Garage Size

Hi all. I had a garage door fitted in the opposite gable end of my garage to where the original door was. Instead of bricking up the old door opening, I am going to build a small extension to make the garage long enough to fit my van inside. I have laid blocks on the ground to show the rough...

    'H' clips?

Hi all. I'm having a go at replacing my garage roof. I currently have corrugated sheets nailed directly to joists, and after 15 years they are warping and tearing badly. I'm going to replace with an EPDM rubber roof so have got some OSB3 board to install as a decking on the joists. Some of the...

Wiring extra sensor into security light

Yep just had a look at the remote sensor, also has 4 connections including earth. So the switched live in the remote sensor connects to the 4th terminal in the light fitting and that's pretty much it? :)

Wiring extra sensor into security light

Thanks, the light has a terminal box with 4 connections - live, neutral, earth, and a white wire which I think is the pir sensor. I will follow your diagram and see where that gets me.

Wiring extra sensor into security light

Can anyone tell me how to do this please. I have installed a light with built in motion sensor at the rear of my garage. I have a standalone sensor to install at the front of the garage, I want the light to come on with either sensor. Thanks

    help with supplying a garage

Haha it might look like it in the photo but I assure you the cable and water pipe aren't coming through the same hole! The cable comes up through the floor in white conduit, and the end of the cable is just hooked behind that pipe to keep it out of the way for the time being :-)

    help with supplying a garage

Well it's been raining hard all day today so after buying another length of swa and some other bits n pieces for doing the single swa length, I set to work wiring the inside of the garage. Working the next 3 days but have a couple days off next week so hopefully get it all done for the weekend...

    help with supplying a garage

Still confused :D Think I will drill an angled hole in the wall, and chisel out the tapered channel to take the strain off the cable as much as possible. Here was me thinking my bit was nearly done!

    help with supplying a garage

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Chisel from the hole downwards, on the outside of the wall, such that the cable can gradually make it's way into the wall?

    help with supplying a garage

Ok thanks for that, I didn't think the SWA would bend and go down the wall neatly after coming out of the hole, so went for the boxes. I wasn't too worried about the outside joins getting wet with them being inside sealed boxes but I think you are right it would be better from the earth...

    help with supplying a garage

Ok looks like it will be next weekend when electrician is coming to connect this up, so here are some pics of what I have done for your scrutiny... The house CU. Looks like there are no spare slots, although two are unlabelled, so I don't know what will need to be done to add in my garage...

    help with supplying a garage

Yeah he never said anything about different supply types, didn't want to confuse me perhaps. The length of cable from CU to garage is approximately 15m. Don't worry I have no intention of connecting this up to the house myself! I have 3 weeks to wait so that gives me time to wire up the...

    help with supplying a garage

Ok thanks for your reply. The garage CU is RCD protected so all ok there. I take it I have earthed the SWA correctly? The part of the cable run inside the house is 6mm squared T+E. This will just go straight into the house CU? It would be useful to be able to easily isolate the circuit from...

    help with supplying a garage

Hi all, been a while. I'm installing a power supply to my dettached garage. I have installed the cable from consumer unit to garage and my electrician friend will be checking this over and attaching the cable at the CU and garage ends when he gets back from holiday. Couple of questions to...
