Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Just an update on my situation.i bought a baffle gasket panel direct from firebird (£41 inc fast post) but it was no better than the ceram board and still left me with the fumey smell. 2 local plumbers/engineers who reguarly buy from the merchants that I work at recommended I buy and use 'fire...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Fair enough- just wanted to if it was a viable option. Will have to see how quick I can get one in Northern Ireland. Next day delivery doesn't seem to be offered by the big boys. Maybe I'll manage to get one from somewhere over here. I have actually had enough of this indoor boiler hassle...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Ok so I took off the baffle door and was going to cut a channel and sit the the rope seal into it but the old worn insulation/gasket fell apart and is of no use now. Obviously I need to get the acc000gsk from a supplier asap but in the mean time would some ceraboard suffice? Or it it inferior...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Just wondering what the normal thickness is for ceraboard used on a firebird boiler. The stuff on it is 20mm but the local merchants said the firebirds use 10mm ceraboard. Should I double it up to make 20mm or just use one layer at 10mm?? Cheers

Cheers John, The first monkey I had around cleaned out the combustion chamber/flue ways , changed a nozzle and left me with a leak of POC AND CHARGED Me 65 quid !! I completely understand Andy and where he is coming from but there are far less fumes escaping now than there was before I touched...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

So far it has cost me 175 quid and I seem to have potentially solved the problem myself in 10 minutes due to advice from here. I am just hoping for success with the third attempt at getting someone who knows what they are up to. I shall have to wait and see. This POC that has been...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Andy I totally get your comment. Sadly the only reason I am asking questions is that the 2 'oftec engineers' I have had round have been completely useless. The first one told me that 'it don't smell that bad' and said his tester would not pick up leaks from the combustion chamber. He went on to...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

How do you know that it has properly sealed?? Is it something that I am best getting a real engineer to do so that he can test it flue gas analyser? I don't mind paying but I have had 2 monkeys around so far and I am not guaranteed that the next one won't be a monkey too... although he seems...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Any? The first monkey I had round claimed that a flue analyser could not pick up minor leaks from the baffle door seal. Seems he was a liar and/or completely incompetent. How tight should I go when doing up the nuts on the burner door? Until it bottoms out or just finger tight? Cheers

Cheers for that burnerman, if my local place doesn't have one I'll use that link.

Is it vermiculite board? And would vitcas fire blanket(which we sell at work) do the same job? Cheers

Thanks boffin, that makes more sense now! Is the board vermiculite? And would vitcas fire blanket (which we sell at work) do the same job ?? Cheers

It appears that the board squashes onto the protruding edges of the baffle chamber and forms a seal... But I don't know. Steven

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

I just went to replace the rope seal on the baffle door of my firebird popular 82 and it appears that there isn't any place for it... the whole of the inside is of the baffle door is filled with a vermiculite insulation that appears to also be the seal... Am I being thick (again) ? Or is it...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. While you do not all (exactly) agree you have given me all the help I could hope for. I'll post back once I have everything sorted. I had intended to do the baffle door seal this eve but beer and takeaway are first on the list. Many thanks

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Cheers boffin, I will get that done and the braided hoses replaced once I pick a pair up. My house is Mouse free so the risk of an impromptu barbecue is fairly slim. Steven

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Hi danoil, It just seems that the 2 guys I had previously had here were not up to much. I have found an older guy who visits the builders merchants where I work and he seemed as shocked you guys about the things the others had done/not done. He advised me to do the baffle door seal myself and...

Oil boiler in utility room 'a bit smelly'

Having spoken to firebird uk I had it confirmed that the baffle door rope seal size is 18mm for all firebird boilers and that they sell it in 3m pieces. I have ordered some rope and the glue for it and will get that installed first and see if the problem is fixed. If it doesn't solve the...
