    Tado / Bypass Radiator

Aye, Assuming fixed speed pumps. Modern pumps are proportional. Modern boilers modulate. But certainly, it's a lot of variation. A modern boiler in non condensing mode is still more efficient than an old non condensing boiler. Heating a large space (or all zones) will still be in condensing...

    Wet supply pipe in kitchen

Ah. Does he mean Ptfe tape on the olive? If you are paying for his time, just tell him to fit a new valve. They are pennies compared to a min call out.

Vaillant ecotec plus 438 no heating or hot water

I refer you to my previous comment about reconnecting/wiring the system from scratch. Oh, and look up some electrical terminology techniques. Yours are awful as is the corrosion. I see no point in fault chasing any further until you clean that mess up tbh.

    Tado / Bypass Radiator

Best place for one. Give it a twist when you are having a shower or bath and you get the room dryer much quicker, a warmer bathroom and a warm towel :) Reliability hasn't been an issue for mine at all.

    Tado / Bypass Radiator

I know. I'm doing a lot of research to get clarity on this because my old non condensing boiler which doesn't really care about return temps, etc is getting long in the tooth. No official or advisory groups mention it though. I get that those doing this for decades may be thinking wtf at the...

    Tado / Bypass Radiator

Hmm. Not true for (some) modern controls. Wiser system simply gives control over to the wireless thermostat paired to the trv. Dunno about Tado though. Op should check.

    Tado / Bypass Radiator

Yeh, hmm. I'm only a DIYer as well but. Read my post history for opinion on "Balancing". I see no value in reducing the performance of the system unless you have a problem. Especially so where all or most valves have TRVs. (Unless you have a crap install and then you are modifying the...

    Tado / Bypass Radiator

Yea, correct. If the bypass isn't open enough, the boiler will trip. Just open it a little more, reset the boiler and so on and so forth.

    Tado / Bypass Radiator

Open to correction but.... You do seem to have a manual bypass (red gate valve) and an old constant speed pump. Therefore you don't need any rads to be locked open and can fit TRVs on all of them. Yours was how my system was before i went down the CH rabbit hole. Because you have a manual...

New combi boiler recommendations for rads and WUFH

UFH on a suspended floor? Hmmm. Is that possible without some serious sub floor insulation engineering?

New combi boiler recommendations for rads and WUFH

Don't throw good money after bad. Your gung-ho attitude will have the plumbing vultures licking their lips. You complaining about boiler running and also say your insulation is poor. The two are not unrelated. Don't just get a boiler chucker in. Get the system reviewed and done correctly...

    Understanding how my boiler operates

Oh, didn't know that. I had one and it was given to me as a freebie. I just clipped the head unit to the incoming supply and it read the kwh. This link is just an example. Im sure there are a bundle of them on Amazon for peanuts.

What do you think of this?

Those little TC engines are ace but they are highly stressed which leads to big bills if they go wrong. I'm sure they are high mileage cars running around fine but they are not designed for a long life. Long stroke, low comp they are not. The oil leak would bother me. Might be nothing though...

    Understanding how my boiler operates

Also to add. If you are needing to keep an eye on energy usage, you can get a monitor. https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/british-gas-energysmart-electricity-monitor-hands-on-nagging-dads-will-love-this/ Might be helpful.

    Understanding how my boiler operates

You can download the instructions for the timer. They are easy enough to set. To save gas/ electricity: Read the timer manual and set the heating to suit. The longer it's on, the more it costs. Turn off rooms you don't use (set the trv to 0). Set the thermostat to as low as you can accept...

    Understanding how my boiler operates

This rad doesn't have a trv and the others do? Trvs limit's the room temp from rising higher than they are set. You can shut the rad down completely by setting them to the lowest setting. This will save gas if you are not using that room.

    Understanding how my boiler operates

Perhaps you might read the thread again. Someone struggling to pay the bills isn't going afford new, state of the art heating systems. And, gas is probably as good as it gets unless you go for positive heat gain devices such as solar etc. Stupid comment.
