    Top Soil in N.Ire

Landscape supplies between ards and Bangor is great. Topsoil is 24/ton and delivery depends but Is about £25 He can do it loose or in bags no one delivers with a forklift, loose is a bit cheaper but at least in bags you can keep it dry if you need to for levelling before turfing etc. What's it...

    Yard floor ideas

Most important question first is do you have clearance to lay something on top? I.e how far is it from the yard floor to the door threshold and can you locate your dpc? If so how much clearance beneath dpc do you have?

whats best base to use on patio ? ballast mot 1?

You want to bring it up in well compacted type 1 mot. Your flags can then be bedded on a grit sand and cement mortar bedding. Bringing it up in concrete, even lean mix, is a waste of money.

    Large concrete block

Dont panic, unless it genuinely was a foundation for a serious structure like a pylon or tower of some sort it is almost certain that it wont be that thick throughout. What your seeing at the edge is merely the downstand shuttered edge which was poured rather than bother building a wall. The...

    Grass hardly grows

That's plenty. Its important to fed a lawn in conjunction with scarifying. Your giving the grass quite a battering so its needs some help to recover. Ideally you would have fed it before doing it but if it hasn't been done recently see if you can bring your next feed forward and do it asap.

    Grass hardly grows

As others have said you must feed it. If you have overseeded by sure not to use a feed and weed 2 in1 type product as that will stop or at least damage the seed from germinating.

    Large concrete block

What makes you think its 2-3 feet thick? Its highly unlikely unless it was the foundation for a bridge or an air-raid shelter?? Are you sure the edge you can see is not a downstand/ ringbeam at the edge? If it really is 2 foot thick it will almost ceratinly be reinforced so a hand held breaker...

    Rock Salt for Block Drive

Just use weedkiller, rocksalt is bad for concrete and the run off is bad for plants too. Its yet another one of those 'I know something special that most people dont' type of comments that some people enjoy making.

Retaining wall- single or double skin?

Definately unsafe to build a single skin retaining wall that height. I would go for perhaps block on the flat (9'') as the backing and then a small 50mm cavity and your brick wall tied in to the block work with wall ties as the facing. This will help keep the brickwork clean as brick retaining...

    Shed base using slabs

Its too small grained and therefore too weak when used in a thick bed like a 40mm bedding. It also holds too much water making it turn into a soup when you tap a flag into it.

    Shed base using slabs

Most professionals lay and point as a seperate process. This is for practical reasons such as using a specialist jointing compound or complex layouts where there may be some grinding and normalising of joints needed post laying. Also there is the issue of having to get on the paving when the...

    Monoblock edge solution

In that case you can not use a jointing compound as the joints in block paving are too narrow and block paving is a flexible surface, i.e its not rigid like a flags laid on a bed of mortar.

    Sunken Patio

If you need help just shout. Paving expert is a great resource for general guides and advice. Paving can be daunting at first but is actually very straighforward if you have the right information and plan well. 90% of jobs not done well are because someone couldn't be bothered and cut corners...

    Shed base using slabs

You need to decide on your finished height, this would be dictated by the surface you are coming up to meet such as existing flags or a lawn etc. Then you decide on your fall and what direction it will fall. So say your existing flags where your starting is at 0cm you want to fall the flags away...

    Monoblock edge solution

Is this for flags? These products are not suitable for use on block paving. They work down to about 4mm when slurry applied. Are the flags well laid? I.e not rocking or dipped at all? If there is any movement it may be a waste of money as the pointing will just break up.

    Sunken Patio

Sorry here is the link. No need for self levelling compound just use a long straight edge or a stringline to get it all flat and right the first time.

Fence post holes - too big.

Same principle applies and its even easier using boards as the posts don't need to be exactly 6 feet apart.

    Sunken Patio

This is not personal i just want to dispell what is a very commonly held myth that spot bedding is correct. I have been laying paving for 15 years and only once have I seen it laid how you described. Its more work levelling two different materials and much more likely to give problems with...

Railway sleepers raised bed - anchor or not

Your problem I the fact that your end sleepers at right angles to the wall are not fixed to the wall so add no restraint to the front ones. You are purely relying on the weight of the front sleepers to stop them overturning forward. If you have a concrete footing and your going on the 200 edge...

    Shed base using slabs

Yep mortar straight on the ground. Lay a full base, create ridges with the trowel that will push flat when you set the weight of the flag down. Check out a vid or two to see the mortar consistancy you want as getting that right makes it much easier.
