New condensing boiler - suggestions please?

Another thread... another boiler question :) I'm looking at new condensing boilers...and the choice is vast.... at the moment we have a Vaillant 242 and it has been OK for the past 12-13 years. I have also been looking at the published energy ratings and those boilers that are A rated...

Vaillant 242 Combi (Beyond Economical Repair?)

Hi all, I have posted here a few times now about my knackered 12-13 year old Vaillant 242 Combi. Although I still need to get someone to look at it I don't want to waste a penny on it if it really is beyond economical repair.... likewise I don't want to pay £1000 plus for a new condensing...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

An interesting thread... http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=20507 Chris has clearly been doing his stuff 8) on here for some time! 8)

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

Sorry I did mean to respond to the suggestion that Chris kindly offered.... The secondary heat exchanger...is that the same as the small (shromed) DHW exchanger that was fitted about 18 months ago.... this is located on the left side of the boiler. I assume it probably isn't, though...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

OK well thats clarified a few things... To be honest I never used the "Pressure Relief Valve" to drain the system... there are plenty of drain points in the system and I would use them. When the pressure was high the other day I used the relief valve...and that started leaking...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

Hi Chris...thanks... I don't think its the pressure relief valve, I believe that is at the top right side of the boiler, it is slightly open (rather than screwed tightly down) and assume that it OK (but perhaps it isn't?) The draining tap/valve is under the boiler, far right of the main...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

Well I managed to stem the flow of most of the water draining from the boiler... So much so that it was just dripping.... I removed the plastic cap on the drain tap (twisting it anticlockwise 90 degrees opens the valve) and gave the brass spindle a few gentle taps with a hammer... it...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

I must admit, I never got around to doing anything about this problem... partly because of the impending move (WHICH NEVER HAPPENED AFTERALL)....and I had loads of other stuff going on which made this a low priority.... But it is back on the Agenda again, plus I have another problem now with...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

No I realise that Chris.... it's also quite expensive I believe... I'm just thinking about short term solutions really because I dont want to spend lots of money on a system I won't be using in about 4 weeks.... I could leave it and lumber my buyers with the problem but that's pretty...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

Thanks guys.... So at the very least, draining the heating system and refilling it may help? You are right the old exchanger was black (not red). The guy who fitted it is the same person that did the installation back in 1994... he's someone I think I can trust and he spent over 2 hours...

Vaillant 242 Combi - DHW variation & sticky boiler drain

<Updated 27th Dec. 2006 to include knackered boiler drain tap> Hi all... Over the past few weeks the hot water from our 12 year old Vaillant 242 boiler has been fluctuating... as far as I can see the central heating temperature is fine. In April 2005 the original "red" heat...

Have I been overquoted for this tiling?

Hi all... I'd appreciate if you could give me some idea if you think I am being ripped off here.... I need to get another quote but I have agreed a price with a builder to do some work for me... but also wanted some additional tiling done... (the first work and the replacement of windows)...

Building a Porch - idea of costs (also building regs?)

Slight variation on this now... have spoken again to the council they said I could send them an informal letter detailing my plans... they would review this and reply with their own informal view of whether planning permission would be required... They have already told me that the plans...

Planning permission - Removing a fireplace??

Yup I believe Building regs are all you need for this... About 10 years ago I moved our fireplace to the left slightly, so it just meant some basic re-routing of the chimney stack....at the time I didn't bother with building regs though. If you want to be extra safe just contact your...

Building a Porch - idea of costs (also building regs?)

Hi there thanks for the reply. I have spoken to a planning officer now and he gave me the same information as you. I am ok on all those points so he told me that the porch would not be a planning issue and would instead be covered by "permitted development Part D?" But.... It would...

Building a Porch - idea of costs (also building regs?)

Hi there, I want to replace the windows in my home and also have a part bricked porch built. I have been quoted £2000 for the follwoing work... which I suppose when broken down and considering the labour is OK... but I just wanted to sanity check the price really... The Porch is 900mm x...

Advice - Leaky Valliant 242 boiler

All sorted last night.... Took the guy 2 hours to fit the conversion kit, clean out the boiler and run a gas pressure test....which apparently read 6.5 which he said was OK. The Heat exchanger is much smaller... zinc or tin plated? and seems to heat the water very quickly which is good...

Advice - Leaky Valliant 242 boiler

Well it's £85 anyway for the exchanger to be fitted I then asked "How much for it to be serviced too" to which his actual words were "That's no problem I'll give it a clean out for you for that price.... there's not much to them.."

Advice - Leaky Valliant 242 boiler

Indeed it does seem like a very sound business model... and let's face it all this plumbing lark and boiler maintainence can't be that hard.... I can do a bit of end feed soldering so I reckon I'm well on my way for a career change now :D An update on the 242... tomorrow I have the original...

Advice - Leaky Valliant 242 boiler

Blimey my Valliant has started a mini-war off here ;) Back to the boiler though... I rung a few people today and was told if I was going to go for a new boiler that I should think about the Valliant TurboMax 282 - one local Plumbers merchants quoted me £760 incl. VAT... another said £810...
