Got to keep you boys on your toes somehow :D So what it seems to boil down to is there's no technical reasoning, its simply that open vented cylinder aren't as well insulated because they're built to sell at a lower price.

Hi Tony I'm assuming "normal" means an unvented cylinder, and you're saying here that new vented cylinders aren't as well insulated and don't have such good coil designs as unvented ones? I think thats the first time a differentiation has been made between cylinder types in this thread...

If you have a heat only boiler, does the pump etc have to be in the airing cupboard near the cylinder? Thats where the first installer was suggesting to put it, which Im personally not sure of given the airing cupboard is in our bedroom, so any noise from it would be an issue at night.
