Is internal wall insulation worth it on a cavity wall?

Yesterday we had our offer accepted on a house and we're now planning what to do with it. One thing we want to do is improve the efficiency. We're going to add an air source heat pump and a 7kWp solar array, and we're considering internal wall insulation. The house was built in the 70s and...

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

Meet my new friend Sentinel Leak Sealer. 2 days in and no leaks. I'd rather have found the leak and fixed it properly, but ripping up a Karndean floor to see if the leak was under it didn't seem like a good idea. Putting gunge in the pipes does seem to have worked. Thanks everyone for the...

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

It's a 1930s semi with a suspended wooden floor. The floor was replaced with large MDF boards with Celotex glued in between the joists 4 years ago after the whole house was replumbed and rewired. I think it reasonable that the soil beneath the house is damp during a rainy October.

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

I've cut 5 test holes in the floor today, all of them right over the pipes. Result! Two inspection sites are where the pipes from the living room rad go under the floor. The pipe is bent, rather than joined with an elbow. As are the dog legs that take it under the door. The other 3 sites...

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

I thought I had it. All on except the living room and downstairs toilet radiators. No pressure loss for 2 days and 1 night. Tried it for a second night and the pressure had gone. I have the week off this week so I'll be taking up some of the floors to see what I find.

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

Yes, except 2 in the loft conversion. I turned everything fully anticlockwise which is off for the other 8 rads. Except these two. Doh!

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

OK, so now I'm confused. Yesterday at 7pm I filled the system to 2.0 bar, I turned the the boiler off, the flow and return off, all rads off at both ends. This morning, I opened the flow and return and the pressure only dropped to 1.9 bar. I opened each rad in turn with no further pressure...

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

The drain is inside on one of the rads. There's no sign of a leak.

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

To answer your questions: 1. To fill up from zero to 1.5 Bar takes about 30 seconds. 2. Not tried a pressure test 3. No external air bleed valves. Didn't know the boiler had one! I've just run my fingers over all the rad and TRV joints. All dry and no visual signs of damp on walls etc. I'll...

A couple of weeks. It was fine before then.

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

Yup. 2 downstairs rads. Suspended timber floor with Celotex glued between the joists. The dining room is Kearndean tile over plywood over chipboard flooring over Celotex. The Mrs is not going to be happy with that being taken up. The boiler is in a side extension. The CH pipes come into...

central heating loses pressure at night but not in the day

My central heating is losing pressure over night. If I fill it in the morning, it is still at pressure in the evening, but by the following morning the pressure is zero. There's no sign of dampness in any of the walls, floors or ceilings. I've had the PRV overflow pipe off and a bowl...

    uPVC door help needed

I've just had some French doors delivered and I'm trying to fit them. The frame is in OK. The instructions say "drop the doors onto the hinges". They only go half way. The hinges on the frame have pins with a narrow turned bit half way up. The doors have holes that are slightly narrower in...

    Timber frame insulation

Should have known not to try to use my own short hand. What I mean is that I don't want to ventilate above the insulation, so the cavity fillled with insulation must be full. The insulation will be between the rafters and between the studs. The vapour barrier will be between the inner surface...

    Timber frame insulation

I'm about to build a timber framed play room in the garden. I've noticed that insulation board is always 5mm thicker than studwork timber (100/125/150mm vs 95/120/145mm). What is the usual practice to get around this? I can't see builders shaving down the insulation or building up the timber...

    sewer smells in ensuite bathroom

We occasionally get sewer smells in our little used ensuite room in our new loft conversion. I suspect it happens when the u bend under the basin dries out as it is plumbed almost straight into the top of the soil stack. We last noticed it on Christmas day when we were getting the loft bedroom...

MHRV drain non return valve needed

The drain has 4 90° bends to form a trap, but as you say, it can dry out. It is connected to the stack as the stack is inside (with a thing on the top to only let air in). There isn't a convenient rainwater drain as it is more or less central in the loft conversion. When it happens, the smell...
