MHRV drain non return valve needed

I've recently had a Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation system fitted as part of a virtual rebuild of my house. It's great, apart from one thing. Occasionally it gives off sewer smells when it is on boost. Google has helpfully told me that it is because the condensate drain pipe is plumbed...

Liquid rubber roof - any good?

I'm planning to build a small porch and was considering an EPDM roof covering. But it's a slightly awkward shape, which will make it more awkward. Then I found liquid rubber roofing, which looks ideal. But is it any good?

New porch. No drain for gutter. What to do?

Just under 3 m2. I might put one of those linear grids in front of the porch and drain he roof into that. In a storm, it will overflow onto the path, but would you know?

Do I need building regs approval for a porch with planning permission?

No. It is an estate of 1930s semis in a suburb of a city. Probably one in five houses in the area have already been rendered. Based on that, the planning officer said she could see no reason why we wouldn't get PP.

Do I need building regs approval for a porch with planning permission?

Hmm. The district planning officer said EWI only needs PP if there is a change of external apperance, e.g. changing from brick to render. She said if we had brick slips or a brick effect render finish, we'd be OK. If we want plain render then we'd need PP. She also stopped us doing a couple...

New porch. No drain for gutter. What to do?

Looking at the rules for a soak away (5m from a building, 2m from a boundary, there isn't space to build one. Even one of 50 litres capacity, which is all I need.

Do I need building regs approval for a porch with planning permission?

Thanks, that's very interesting, especially re pard D of PD rules. The planning officer said we could extend to the side, and do a loft conversion under PD. But we would have to apply for PP to add external insulation and build the porch. I'll look into Pt D and may just go ahead.

Do I need building regs approval for a porch with planning permission?

I've been told I have to apply for planning permission to build a porch outside my front door as it will extend beyond the side of the original house. That's fine with me. Having done this, do I have to get building regs approval from the council's building inspector during the build?

New porch. No drain for gutter. What to do?

I like this. If the planners do to (I've got to apply for permission) that's what I'll do, thanks.

New porch. No drain for gutter. What to do?

Now most of the interior of our new house is done, I'm turning my attention to the outside. I want to build a porch by the front door (which is set back 3.5m from the "front" of the house). On inspection, there is no surface water drain nearby. The main roof gutters feed to a drain at the...

Minimum width between stairs off a landing

It mentions cupboard doors that open onto landings, it mention doors that open over landings at the bottom of stairs. It doesn't mention doors that open away from landings

Minimum width between stairs off a landing

The room at the back could have the step set back without a problem, but setting the door back as well is going to make life difficult. The room at the front opens into the slope of the roof. The builder wants to cut the corner of the door off so it will open. I want to put in a small velux...

Minimum width between stairs off a landing

Here's the pic again as it didn't seem to work

Minimum width between stairs off a landing

We're a few weeks into a loft conversion and the builder has just flagged up a potential problem with the stairs. The stairs go up the middle of the house to a small landing. From the landing there are two steps up into the room at the front and two steps up to the room at the rear. One...

Self levelling screed for the novice

I am going to put the chipboard onto the joists. I don't know yet whether I should screed over the chipboard or screed up to it. I believe latex screed can be laid over timber.

I'll clean them up and go over then. We're going to use chipboard flooring for the rest.

Self levelling screed for the novice

The tiles are probably original from 1935. I'll make sure there's a liquid dpm put down, thanks. The tiles are about 10mm lower than the timber floor in the dining room. Is there any reason to lift them or should I leave them and screed over?

    Staircase headache

You have 4 treads between the winders and quote the length as 800mm. The treads should be 240mm long to go with the rise so you can only fit in 3 treads. Put one in at the top after the winder to make up the number.

Thanks for the pointer, I'll have a read. Sorry, I didn't see the floors forum.
