When were the 'best' houses built?

After having viewed quite a few properties before settling on the one I eventually bought a couple of years back, I'm left wondering in which era, or housebuilders built the best houses. "Best" as in terms of quality - strength of structure, materials, durability, ability to stand the test of...

    Repairing a Floating Floor

Thanks for the reply gregers. Do you have any more information on these 'cleats'? What they are, where I can get them etc? I'm guessing they screw to the top of the board so you'd feel them under the lino? Still, I'd rather have that than have the board flexing.

    Repairing a Floating Floor

Downstairs in my house I've got a floating floor which consists of an inch or so of polystyrene over the substrate, damp proof membrane, and floating tongue and groove chipboard floor, then just lino on top. I've recently had a bit of plumbing work done and the guy has cut straight through a...

Where can I get 160mm round gully grid?

A couple of my outside plastic gully covers have been missing since I moved in and they're 160mm diameter round but I can't find them for sale anywhere. I can find 150mm round, 175mm round, and 160mm square but not 160mm round. Any ideas? I presume it's not a common drainage size.

Washing machine standpipe for condensate waste

Some boiler manufacturers and industry guidance says that you can boss a condensate pipe for a condensing boiler into a washing machine standpipe. Is this assuming the washing machine standpipe is actually still being used by the washing machine? I'm just wondering if a washing machine pump...

Drip from ballcock (not the spout)

On closer inspection you were right first time. It's not actually the big nut that's leaking - it's from where the white spout pushes/screws in. The water is coming up through the threads then dripping down off the lowest point of the valve body. The old valve never had this problem so I'll put...

Drip from ballcock (not the spout)

I think the leak is on the threads of the large nut (that the float arm is attached to). Should these be watertight? If so, how? I believe it's just a screw fit. I've checked it and it's tight.

Drip from ballcock (not the spout)

When the tank is filling up, I'd say almost as much water comes out of this part as the white spout! After the spout has stopped dripping, water continues to drip out of the bottom of this knurled section. Lifting the arm up does seem to stop the drip, or at least slow it to hardly anything...

Drip from ballcock (not the spout)

I've had a new ballcock fitted and have noticed that water comes out of not only the white spout/nozzle, but also a drip from underneath the knurled brass ring at the front of the valve (where the arm attaches to). Surely this isn't meant to happen? Is there any way this can be tightened up...

What sort of finish is this?

Sorry what do you mean by taped it? They would just tape the corners not the rest of the walls?? Why would that be? That corner piece in the photo is the only bit where the covering has come off, which was probably caused by someone catching it when walking past. It does look like you could...

What sort of finish is this?

My house (built late 1980’s) has this lovely swirly patterned wall finish throughout the hall, staircase and landing. But what is it exactly? I know it looks like artex but it’s not particularly brittle (although it may have several coats of paint over it). At the same time it’s not wallpaper as...

    Push Button Flush

I've got a toilet with a push button flush which operates the flush mechanism by cable. I've only worked on the siamp style in the past so am not familiar with these cable operated ones. The mechanism's on the blink (once the flush button is depressed, the flushing mechanism stays up/in the...

Combi - time for HW to reach taps

Indeed, I know that you've got to drain off all the cold water sitting in the pipes and that the boiler size doesnt make any difference to that. My question is more to do with after the cold has been drawn off - assuming the tap is half or 3/4 open, does a higher kW boiler provide hotter water...

Combi - time for HW to reach taps

Thanks chaps but I'm still none the wiser. TCCHeating, your theory does make sense with the 8lpm vs 16lpm boilers however its the time taken to reach the tap, not the theoretical volume that can be achieved that I'm looking at. Let me say I have really good water pressure. It's higher than in...

Combi - time for HW to reach taps

I'm going combi rather than unvented, just trying to figure out if its best to go bigger or not. I rarely have the hot tap opened full bore so the difference between 28kW (11.4 litres per min @35 degree rise) versus 32kw (13.1 litres per min @35 degree rise) isn't that important to me...

Combi - time for HW to reach taps

So does that mean it could actually take longer for a bigger combi to supply hot water to the taps?

Combi - time for HW to reach taps

Just a quick question... Does a bigger sized combi boiler (e.g. 36kW vs. 28kW) mean that the HW reaches the hot tap any quicker, or is it purely the flow rate that's better with the bigger combi?

    Vacuum Cleaner Motor Shaft

Noticed a burning smell and smoke coming from my vacuum cleaner so took it apart, cleaned out the loose dust/hair, and fitted a new belt. There's no smoke now but the motor is getting very hot and having taken it apart again, the motor shaft is very very hot after it's only been switched on...

    Beko Washing Machine Moise

My Beko machine has developed a discomforting noise - It's a whining/electronic sound - very much like the noise when a car is. When you turn the drum by hand you hear it instantly. I know on most machines there's normally a minor noise (is it the motor or drivebelt you can hear turning?) but...

    Boiler Recommendations Needed

Well one thread is for the pump overrun and this one is for boilers but invariably this one meandered onto the overrun topic. Can't see why Viessmann have theirs set up differently on the 100W to everyone else. Thanks for the pointers about sludge on the Vaillant. I was looking at the Pro...
