    Oil boiler filled with soot

Comments from new customers I go to seem to go along the lines of "decent oil men are as rare as hens teeth" - there's a number of fellas out there having been to oftec assessments and then let loose with no experience learning on the job at the customers expense, or plumbers that do a bit of...

oil boiler blowing rcd on ignition........help please

Unplug the solenoid and fire the boiler up, if it goes to lock out rather than tripping the rcd then replace the coil. Look at the transformer to see if it's deformed. Post back if no joy...

    Boiler cutting out

Sounds like you were looking at the HT leads from the transformer possibly shorting out, could be carbon deposits on the electrodes causing the spark to track, could be the transformer is knacked too, you've probably already called someone in by now I'd imagine. But let us know what the result...

    The oil mans magnet stick

John - I do the same as oilhead with a volt sensor and a screwdriver stuck in the coil and as he says it's useful for poking into places you don't want to stick a wet finger into (saves pulling out the multimeter unless you have) If you've got the money burning a hole in your pocket it may...

    The oil mans magnet stick

Is this the solenoid tester John? If so I've got it but never use (was given it) if not this I'm intrigued as I love a gadget!

    Boulter Camray 5 Oil Boiler

He doesn't need to be registered to fix it...I've followed on from a couple engineers called out through bank policies as they couldn't fix the problem... You may get a positive response if you call your oil supplier for a recommendation, longer you leave the less chance you'll get anyone...

    Commercial boiler instumentation cable termination?

Traditionally BT and cable companies used 2 pair to supply the house, then 3 pair internally. Only 1 pair is needed to supply the line to the master socket then 1 wire is needed to extend the bell circuit. But Agiles' point that it is easily available still stands. I wouldn't cut back spare...

Grant oil combi with no hot water

Both Tibbot and Oilhead have given you sound advice on what to test, have you tried anything they suggested? As Tibbot has said we're here to help where we can, there's no benefit to us giving free advice other than the warm fuzzy feeling when it's taken on board and the right solution is...

Grant oil combi with no hot water

There's a number of things it could be (flow switch, pump, PCB) - you may be better asking your oil supplier if they can recommend a service engineer if you don't fancy chancing one from the local paper...

    smelly oil fumes

Bearing in mind the boiler is 25+ years old it's unlikely to give you text book setting, you may need to be flexible with the old girl. Take Tipper and Oilheads' advice re nozzle and pump output (120 psi is the figure I go with as rule of thumb and set the combustion from there). I would...

    smelly oil fumes

I was going to ask whether it was sooty inside - you might want to give it a clean out now. I like to set my burners up at 10-11% CO2, O2 should be around 6-7% with 0 smoke, so take off a bit more air.

Sterling 40 oil burner lockout - how do I check for ignition

You should be able to unplug the coil and stop the solenoid opening, but best to be safe and point tube away from you and use a small mirror to look at spark.

    smelly oil fumes

150psi? is it gas oil? I'd be looking at around 120psi on kero. try getting the 12% down to 10% or 11% and see how she runs.

    Oil boiler - rapid cycling

The filter should be checked at each service (if accessible) - when was it last serviced? I dip the tank at each service with water finding paste to check for carp at bottom of tank. Is it a metal or plastic tank? Gas oil or kerosene? How much water in filter?

    Riello whining noise.

It requires taking off the oil pump (some guys take off the control box too for ease of access). Make sure the electric is off and clip the wires to the old motor inside the control box, then when you thread through the new ones you'll know where they're going Only issue with it is; if the...
