    Is this permissable? - Picture

Electronically there is no difference. Its just that I wanted to put all the sockets on one ring and remove the Octopus completly. As its impossible to include these 4 sockets in a ring I was just checking that there is nothing wrong in connecting a Radial circuit in this manner using a JB?

    Is this permissable? - Picture

I am re-wiring a ring main. I have a problem in that there is an extension at the back of the house with 2 sets of 2 sockets both sets fed from a single 2.5 T&E from the infamous octopus. There is no access to the roof void to the extension and the cables have been plastered over/tiled...

    Help/Advice required - piccies

I wasn't going to re-connect the rubber cable permanently, I was just going to temporarily connect it with the power off and retry the N-N continuity to see if that was the cause of the < 99.9 reading. On hindsight, even if it was the cause, it will still need the rewire anyhow. I am interested...

    Help/Advice required - piccies

I recently changed a CU (LABC notified etc) in a bungalow. There were only 4 circuits – lights, sockets, Immersion, Cooker. Both the Immersion & Cooker were not in use any more so when re-connecting I just connected the lights & sockets. Because the light circuit had no cpc I re-wired that...

Refused a Job - Messy Loft

That spotlight was most convenient as it was pointing directly at the consumer unit. Sweetness I WAS only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head, however that joke isn't funny anymore.

Refused a Job - Messy Loft

Yes, I was doing an intricate backwards crab manoeuvre when I encountered the sharp point of an arial in my ear which knocked me off balance. I instinctively put my foot down and..

Maybe I should have asked for some advice before starting my current job as Plus Equals as I have found to my cost....

Refused a Job - Messy Loft

As a matter of interest has anyone every refused to do a job because there is so much junk in the attic?

Junction Boc in attic - everything goes into it

There is one metal double dimmer switch which the owner had previously assured me was earthed. I had a look and guess what! nothing. Not only that but the live cable had been trapped by the screw and was practical through to the bare conductor.

Junction Boc in attic - everything goes into it

I assumed it wanted to know where to upload the photo from a la Hotmail. sorry. Thanks for the photo tip. Hopefully it will work this time and answers mdbalson's question. As you (hopefully) can see there seems to be a few sizes of cables. Those white cables are feeding 2 sockets.

Junction Boc in attic - everything goes into it

I am fairly new to this game and whilst trying to trace a cable in the attic of a house I came across a metal box about 6" by 4" which it seems every cable in the house goes in and out of (its a bunglow and there are only 4 circuits). There are 4 banks of 4 terminals with the left hand 8...

    Work on domestic circuits

To be fair Gary it was meant to be a blanket statement to emphasise the point that there are regulations which need looking at when adding sockets.

    Work on domestic circuits

Anyone competent can still do electrical work. The difference is whether you notify the local building control or not and getting your work checked after. If you are simply adding a spur to an exisiting circuit (bearing in mind regulations regarding ground floor sockets) this is classed as...

    Make Up Of Consumer Unit

Yes I discussed this at the time but they wanted to split the job for financial reasons. After reading all the advice I have decided that a larger CU with some spare ways is the best solution. I will just have to put my woodworking skills to use regarding the dismantled cupboard. Thanks for...

    DIY getting caught!

I went to the council to give notification of an impending DB change. I handed the planning form over and they asked me how much it costs as they didn't know! (it was £94 inc vat if interested). I then asked how long I had to wait before starting (I knew the answer but wondered if they did -...

    Make Up Of Consumer Unit

Thanks for that John, I have seen a 5 way consumer unit that will fit but the RCBO's are pretty expensive, though as they only want one for now its not too bad. I will give the customer the choice of small restricted CU with RCBO or making the cupboard bigger. (Incidentally a larger CU won't...

    Make Up Of Consumer Unit

I am one of these much maligned people who have just completed a 'part p' course. However I don't think for one moment I am in any way remotely qualified to call myself an 'electrician'. I have always been competent in DIY electrics and after a mid-life crisis wanted to have one last career...
