    Non existent pointing

Done a bit more research and it looks like these may be Accrington bricks that have possibly been pointed with red mastic at some point over the original mortar. Just trying to get the gaps water tight for the winter and can spend more time general repointing next year. Any thoughts on what to...

    Non existent pointing

Hello Everyone. Looking for a bit of pointing advice. My Daughter bought a 1930's semi which is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare with sunken floors, wonky door casings, strange smells; to be honest beginning to wish she'd never bought it. But my immediate concern with winter approaching is...

    Kitchen smell

This is my fear..all suspended floors. Not lifted the kitchen floor yet as was trying to cover any other possibilities first.

    Kitchen smell

The sink starts at 40 but steps down to 32 for the outlet pipe. Replaced it all a week ago and the smell is still there. Seems to be worse when first going in.

    Kitchen smell

The break in the soil stack is kind of mid Way between the door and the window though and wondered if it could flow in via the vent above the door. Daughter has been in here since February and smell only started a couple of weeks ago.

    Kitchen smell

Actually, the p trap is missing here, but this was the set up, replaced all but the black outlet from the sink. Pipe runs straight outside and to the drain cover.

    Kitchen smell

I'm only there at the weekend so can't post photos till Saturday but I replaced a shallow p trap with a new deeper p trap and all new outlet pipes.

    Kitchen smell

The top of the pipe is damaged too (and open) so may have been higher, but the smell is not upstairs only in the kitchen. I changed the p trap and outlet pipe under the sink but not the sink plug unit or overflow. No dishwasher and the washing machine has a separate outlet.

    Kitchen smell

Daughter has developed a bad sewage type smell in the kitchen. I've replaced all the sink drain plumbing, but the smell is still there. This weekend I spotted a hole in the cast iron soil stack (as shown approx on image) behind the pipe next to the wall. On inspection this was the same smell and...

    Lost communication

Just for clarity, this one is also in the hall and has similar functions to the one you describe, but it is a wireless thermostat as not in the same room as the boiler. I suppose it was put in the hall as this is more of a central point in the house to where the boiler is located. I could change...

    Lost communication

I have had the stat right up to the receiver when pairing with no change. Will give new batteries a try though. Is the alarm light just to alert that they are not talking?

    Lost communication

Do you think that's worth a try? No battery errors or an indication they are failing. Nothing to lose I suppose.

    Lost communication

I know this has probably been covered before but just want to check before I condemn the thermostat. Daughter has bought a house with a British Gas RC Plus wireless thermostat. Although we couldn't get it to do exactly what we wanted it was working. But we had to drop the power to the boiler and...

Renovate up and over garage door.

I have a wooden up and over garage door that is badly rotting. The metal frame, subframe and opening system is fine, so I want to build a new wooden outer cover to fit to the subframe. My question is what to use for panelling, currently it is panelled in ply but I wondered if tongue and groove...

    Smartmeter usage rise

Just tested it this morning and put the boiler on for half an hour and it has used 7 KWH. It is just a sudden jump from the 12 KWH for 5 hours heating on Monday.

    Smartmeter usage rise

@Old Salt I appreciate its been a bit colder today but the readings show 4 times as much energy for 1 extra hour usage....seemed a bit extreme.

    Smartmeter usage rise

Just identified a massive rise in my smartmeter gas usage today. It has gone from a reasonably steady 12 KWH per day to 50 KWH today and had the heating on maybe an hour more than yesterday (6 hours rather than 5). Has anyone any idea why this has happened? Can it be a smartmeter fault? Do...

    Flue fan

I'm not unhappy about the replies, just the way some of them are delivered. I'll quite happily go through a qualified gas specialist, but one that will talk to me in a reasonable manner without trying to belittle me. I only wanted some advice whether this was a job I could undertake myself, if I...
