Ceiling rose - again.. (updated with picture)

Theres reds missing... maybe you also have some reds together in the ceiling void ? Just one earth also tells me theres more above the ceiling. Switch off the breaker for the lights (or pull the fuse) and try to pull out everything inc. conn. blocks and then start from there.

    Lights go out intermittently

Modern low voltage transformers have inside them thermistors or small thermocouples which switch off the supply if they get too hot and this is whats happening in your case I think. Remove the fittings and check to see if there is lagging around the fitting/transformers and move it out of the...

    Cavity IInsualtion causing rewiring problems

Just had another thought. If the plaster board is new just remove it, run the cables and fit new board...its easy. If its been plastered and painted then refer to my previous answer.

    Cavity IInsualtion causing rewiring problems

Im a little confused. Cavity insulation is usually pumped into the cavity between the outside wall and its inner wall. I cant see why a metal stud wall was built on the inside of these walls for the insulation to "pop" into! Anyway assuming that this is the case I can see no other option...

    BATHROOM DOWNLIGHTS

I assume the lamps are either 35 or 50W. Make sure that the transformers are 150VA and no less. I use a cable that has good heat resistance properties. Its identical to normal flex but a little more robust. Normal flex has a number which is 3183Y, the cable I use is 3093Y. Get it from a...

    How deep below Joists

I have a similiar situation. I see no reason why 30" would not be enough. Of course make sure you wont end up with a tree coming through the floor next year.

    Consumer Unit Chaos

It looks to me like the old s/f is earthed via a bare copper conductor which is twisted together with another coming from the "redundant" s/f above the meter. The new digital meters being fitted at present are a result of a million pound fine dished out to energy companies for non accurate...

    Generator - Basics question.

Interesting thread. I would have thought that to isolate via the DP switch on the CU would isolate the house...unless the dreaded well meaning neighbour has his "widow maker" still plugged in. Yes it does depend on the Loop impedance and also it must be said the position of the cycle...

    Generator - Basics question.

I appreciate that but here we are discussing the earthing arrangements of Generators etc. In my honest opinion the only level of competence is that of a trained individual otherwise they are incompetent. When you get a dead short across 2 phases you can be damned sure that meter will not...

    Best mix for concrete

I was my mates labourer when I got him to do work on my house and this is what he told me to do...... In the cement mixer goes the following....(Water should always be in it to start with) , 6 good shovels of ballast, then half a bag of cement followed by another 6 good shovels of ballast, put...

    Generator - Basics question.

Oh my goodness the potential for death on this thread is serious. I once heard of a woman who ran out of juice on her key meter on Xmas day. Her ignorant but helpful neighbour did exactly what was mentioned above....he made a lead with a plug on both ends and plugged into his socket, ran the...

    Fitting a 2-Way light switch to replace a 1-Way

I am sure all the Electricians here know this already but the sole purpose of using Red (old wiring) and Brown (New harmonised colours) is to identify the fact that they are all Live conductors. That is to say in spite of the different colours they are all on the "live" side of the circuit in a...

    Under-tile heating question.....

Christian and Beccy, I am sure everything will be fine as long as you have used flexible adhesive between the Tiles and backing board with the heating cable in between. I do hope you located the controls outside the bathroom as well as the Spur power supply...and fed it from an RCD. Hope it...

    Under-tile heating question.....

Moz hope you got a fully qualified electrician to sign that work off as competant ? or else you will never sell your house without ..lol I am indeed a time served Electrician of some 25 years and now Part P qualified. But I am not a Tiler :P

    Under-tile heating question.....

I have installed underfloor heating in an extension which is joined to a conservatory, this is what I did. The base flooring is tongue and grooved (treated) chipboard....as said above , not ideal. Onto that I have put Thermal aqua panels which are 12mm thick and available from Wickes or...
