    Retaining wall

Blimey I didn't think new homes could get much worse but there they are. Its like some regency and 30's arts and crafts have been dropped in a blender together. The depressing thing about that Alan de Botton thing was the number of people on it insisting that they love this fake [and very badly...

    ford ka radio code

The code is on a sticker or card that comes with the radio instruction manual. If you knew this but don't have the docs then forgive, I just thought I'd point it out

    Radiator tails and sizes

Advice needed before I take this thing apart. Is the fitting for tails standard or is it common for new valve tails not to be able to fit into a radiator? My new TRVs come with 15 mm tails and the existing ones are I think 3/4". Whatever they are they're bigger than 15mm. Also the existing...

    sockets are all spurs!!?

No PIR as far as I know/ Its a really dodgy 70's 80's conversion. I've never heard of PIR before googling it just now so I think I'm going to leave well alone. Unless I can positively identify the ring circuit and work with that cos I'm certainly not taking the bedroom floor up. Thanks for...

    sockets are all spurs!!?

Been trying to find the ring cable, I took off the face plate of a socket and it was a spur running up from the floor behind the skirting, no worries there but then the other two sockets in the room were wired like spurs as well. Haven't looked at the rest of the flat yet but I need to ask...

    Tile vent

Just got a tile vent to route an extractor pipe through. The instructions are for fitting as part of the roof building, any clues on how to fit into an existing roof? Is there enough flexiblilty in the surrounding tiles to lift a tile out, or conversely insert a new tile? Thanks Marko

    Anybody had/fitted 'Suntile' or 'Skytunnel'?

Inlaws have two suntubes fitted in a dark hallway and they work quite well. You're right to think about a light well if you want equivalent of a window's worth of light though.

    Firedoor design

Are firedoors always of the hollow-airpocket variety? Is it possible to make a firedoor using a traditional mortice and tenon arrangement? I suspect I know the answer to this one but I had to ask!

1/4" crack has appeared on the outside wall

We've just come out of the other end of a subsidence claim and its a b____d not least cos you can't get anyone to insure you. Aaaaaanyhoo definately get the drain checked and also look at any nearby trees either standing or recently removed. The other posters are right when they say you need...

    Shield anchors

Thanks all for the advice. Its obvious when pointed out; its a hole, you stick an anchor in and it has to be snug enough not to spin when you tighten it. I tend to overthink these things and look for mysterious builder know-how rather than the bleeding obvious. I've done the job and most of...

    Shield anchors

Bold down? No. Joist hangers into brick, well I say brick, funny white bricks, think they may have been some sort of cement composite things but thats another story

    Shield anchors

They were M8x60mm and needed a 14mm bit. Some of the bolts took and others didn't so maybe I need to refine my drilling skills.

    Shield anchors

Anyone got any handy hints on using shield anchors? Had a lot of trouble getting them to tighten. Used the right bit for the size of anchor but still found them spinning in their hole. Very frustrating. Cheers in advance.

    Drilling *very* hard concrete

I've just finished my first job and came up against a similar problem. Two melted bits later I did some research, found this, looked at some of the posts on this forum and bought a 3kg AEG SDS drill. Words like hot knife and butter are what come to mind. Its brilliant. 3kg is about as much as I...
