    ES and SES polarity checks

Does no-one sell BC and ES plugs anymore? ISTR some concerns about people using the BC type as an inline connector but one would have thought that someone would make them available to electricians.

Do you bother with 1mm t&e and 16mm patresses

Yes, most manufacurers do a 32mm-36mm steel box (the exact dimensions vary from manufacturer to manufacturer). Try screwfix or TLC Direct.

    MV Cable laying

I'd start with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002 and go from there. Regulation 14(2) looks like a good place to start. Also, try contacting the Distribution Network Operatrs for information, by following the links above and the Local Authorities for their...

    MV Cable laying

Makes sense (now!) I don't know of any that are up to date. You'll need to cross-reference these three: http://www.electricity.org.uk/default.asp?action=article&ID=153 http://www.energynetworks.org/ http://www.energylinx.co.uk/distribution.html

    MV Cable laying

Do you mean warnings for buried cables, or cable colours, or identifying services? The main specification is "BS7671: 2001 Requirements for Electrical Installations", available from the IEE or from BSi. There are specific standards for the various details of buried cables. The National...

ATTENTION all ppl who put DIYERS off

This is going to be a long post, please bear with me. I do not believe this is the case. Most electricians are members of at least one professional organisation - part of the membership requirements (and part of simply behaving responsibly) is to give appropriate advice. Unfortunately a...

    Non-combustible surface

True, but perhaps it has little bearing on electrics. One of the electrical bodies (I forget which one) undertook a study a few years back into the combustability of accessories with wooden components - both antique components and ranges currently offered by manufacturers. The conclusion was...

    Old house

It is not required. It is the same as, say, a home-buyers survey. You don't have to have one and the seller doesn't have to take notice. But if the buyer insists that problems are fixed/work is certified or otherwise insists on a discount, what are you going to do as a seller? Similarly...

    Old house

I think dphomes means that it may be difficult to sell your house without an electrical certificate and may cause delays in the sale (while you get an electrician in to inspect, test and fix your electrics). Search this forum for "part p" or do a google search for "part p" or "approved...

    Old house

For a minute there, I thought you were going to say that you would be providing an independant service to test the proposed methods, prior to the DIYer going for it. :o -- Michael

    lighting problem

See the right-hand part of the first picture and the right-hand part of the second picture in the "For reference" post. They both show the same thing, just using a slightly different drawing style. In your case your bathroom light is wired the same way as the kitchen light in the second...

    theatre-style light switches

Hi, I have a customer - an infirm couple - with 8 candle lamps in their sitting room. Every time one of the candle lamps blows, the MCB trips. Changing the fittings is not an option. I've tried replacing the MCB with a 6A type "C" and tried a couple of different manufacturers for the...

    Help with electrical problem

Have you tried moving the PC to another floor in your house (assuming that upstairs and downstairs rings are seperate), then turning off all the other circuits again? This would help proove that the thing causing the interference is on the same circuit as your PC was. -- Michael

    CU replacement and seal break

ISTR it is good practice to put the two ends of each ring final cpc in different holes on the terminal block. Perhaps this is why on some boards the earth terminals aren't numbered? -- Michael
