    Was the grey wire part of a 3 core cable? The other wires should have been brown and black (plus earth of course). Sounds like the switch wire for the fan. Any chance of a picture?

    No, but it makes it very clear what is DIY territory and what isn't. More importantly it emphasises the need to get all work checked out by a qualified electrician before getting them to connect to the supply! I would feel happier knowing that someone had followed the advice given in this book...

    Also, I would suggest the "Which? Guide to Wiring & Lighting". can't remember the author's name. The Electrician's guide is a great book for the regs, but won't tell you 'how to' step by step. Good Luck, and if you need any advice this forum is a wealth of knowledge!

    I would have said that if you used stuffing glands (or similar, depending on type of cable), then this would be a better option in many cases...anyone care to comment?
