Hi, Went with plastering in the end - got a good job too. Suspected the artex was 70s or early 80s so a good risk of asbestos. Thanks all

Some more details - all walls have been hardwalled, PVAed and skimmed (on top of the Artex). In total, I would say about a quater of an inch deep. The fella said it would be OK to paint in about a week but from what I've read that seems very soon.

Also, old Artex could well contain asbestos (up to and including the 80s) so skimming is the best idea to be safe.
