Old floorboards - what is underneath?

What would be the best approach to fix the boards in place?

Old floorboards - what is underneath?

Another question: If the boards are to go above the DPM, would I still want to nail them through the DPM? I assume this would create various weakness points, is this just something one has to live with?

Old floorboards - what is underneath?

Thanks again, I never noticed any damp on the walls or the skirting, we have even pulled all of the old wallpaper and had it replastered early in January... No signs of anything bad. I did have a floor professional over today and his advice was to talk to a builder or someone who is into damp...

Old floorboards - what is underneath?

Hi, Thanks for your input. I have read about what you have mentioned. The bitumen feels very smooth on touch, from a distance it looked even liquid which was quite scary... But it is actually dry to the touch, as far as I can feel in the boards I pulled up. Most of the boards in these 2 rooms...

Old floorboards - what is underneath?

Ripped out fairly old carpet from the living room and dining room of our 1930s house to find the floorboards in a much worse state than the upstairs rooms. The boards look mostly fine in the centre of the rooms, but the edges appear to have been painted in the past, I believe this used to be...

    Removing old Telewest cable

I can only assume the mystery cable used to run somewhere in the house and must have been cut to make way for the other BT sockets that were put up (we pulled those out and plastered over). Only way to find out is when we decide to move the door forward I guess (this is part of the work we...

    Removing old Telewest cable

Thing is, I have another Virgin/Telewest feed into my house, similar to this: This is where the braodband coax comes in, and is what we use for internet. There are no other sockets in the house. Mystery cable. I can't really pull it out as it would damage the sealant around the front door.

    Removing old Telewest cable

So, I opened the Telewest socket to have a look, and I was surprised to find 2 cables! (image attached) The black one goes outside my property, as shown in the previous pictures of this topic, but I have no idea what the grey/top cable is and where it leads to! It follows along/inside the uPVC...

    Removing old Telewest cable

The cables looked pretty messy, even for someone who knows absolutely nothing about this! But I was much more scared by the MASSIVE spider nest I found inside (photos were after cleanup..), must have been a good hundred of the little buggers running around!! Mum-spider didn't looked pleased...

    Removing old Telewest cable

No, it goes straight into a pole just down my street.

    Removing old Telewest cable

The photos on the original point details all the connection points - inside house, outside cable running through, telewest junction box. From the junction box, the cables just run underground. Unless I'm missing something here?

    Removing old Telewest cable

As in these cables right (highlighted in red crosses)? The coax being the thick broadband one right?

    Removing old Telewest cable

Should I touch the junction box at all at or just leave the cable to the side?

    Removing old Telewest cable

Speaking about the telewest line exclusively, would I just remove the socket and leave the cable behind any new plaster I put up? Could I also remove the cable altogether? It runs across my house and doesn't look all that great.

    Removing old Telewest cable

Yes, I have received quotes from both companies to move them. The BT one is fair enough, I might have some use for it in the future, so will move it to another room (where the current virgin broadband cable and my network sits at).

    Removing old Telewest cable

Decorative purposes, we are having some work done and would like to replaster. The BT one I am happy to pay to have it relocated (it is the master socket), but the telewest one is just a nuisance and remnant of older days.

    Removing old Telewest cable

I have just had one impressive phone call with Virgin. Have been told they can't send someone to remove this now, but I could contact a "local tech" (whatever that means???) to do it, OR, I could just disconnect the socket and leave the cable behind the wall. Completely different response to my...

    Removing old Telewest cable

I don't think they have a "legal" jurisdiction over them, but their official response is "we don't recommend the client having any interaction with the cables". I have also just checked with them over the phone, the line is dead as phone is now provided via the Virgin Hub. So it is a completely...

    Removing old Telewest cable

(Part of another conversation) I have an old Telewest socket (phone line I believe?) that I would like to remove prior to redecoration. Some assumptions: * We have no use for this whatsoever, and never will. * Socket was already in the house prior to us moving in, never been used. * We are...

    Removing old telewest/bt sockets

So it looks like Openreach want £126.72 to move the master socket. Virgin wants £99 to get rid of the phone socket.
