    Emergency Services

Wish so FWL! It would make our life a hell of a lot easier, but it isn't that simple Our national emergency call centre, which is currently in Dublin only has a 'caller display' system similar to that of a domestic householder. Yes, the location of mobile phones can be traced,(provided they are...

This is what Ban.... is referring to. Although it could be fitted in place of the existing socket, it is possibly more appropriate to fit it elsewhere. e.g alongside you new socket(s)

Simply upgrading the breaker to a 32A shouldn’t be a problem, but inspect the circuit/wiring first.

    Cable size for kitchen ring?

Socket circuits in industrial installations in ireland MUST by ETCI regs be wired using 6sq and protected with a 32A MCB. The point i was making is that commercial/industrial installations are generally designed to cater for the maximum load (within reason) likely to be placed upon them...

    Cable size for kitchen ring?

2.5mmsq is the standard size cable for use in all ring circuits throughout the house. Is it possible to wire the circuit with 6sq and protect with a 40A MCB? In Ireland it is not. ETCI regs do not allow more than a 25A breaker protecting 2.5sq (20A in practice). Perhaps someone can clarify the...

It's Offical, Cable Colours to Change

Well, its about time ye got up to speed with the rest of us! In relation to when exactly this is coming into practice, Many of the larger retailers in N. Ireland are currently selling off old stock. And at a very good price too! I emptied the van, went to belfast, and bought 25 100M reels of...

    Smoke from Washine Machine

Good point breezer, i was just making the point about the labour costing so much. As for creda, the washing machine will be fully covered, parts and labour in ireland anyway for 12mts. All appliances are. As for the link, if i see it again i'll........  :twisted...

    Smoke from Washine Machine

and you may find that the hotpoint engineer charges so much for the labour, that to you, the parts aren’t really FREE! I got a quote of €65 to replace the inlet valve on a whirlpool washing machine (which had free parts warranty). I bought the valve directly from whirlpool for €30 and fitted...

    Maximum cable length

Generally in houses I would put the following socket circuits 1 Kitchen 2. Utility 3. Sitting room 4. Rest of house I know this seems like a large circuit for the 'rest of house' but in practice it is the circuit, which has, the least load placed upon it.

help connecting a halogen ceiling light track

This apparatus does not require an earth as no bare metal surfaces exist. Any appliance will work perfectly well without an earth, it is there for safety purposes only. To put this simply, should a fault occur in which you are likely to get a shock, the earth wire will cause the fuse to blow...

help connecting a halogen ceiling light track

After rereading the 'NOTE' let me clarify two things. The notice refers to the 12V wiring, this is the flex going from the transformer to the lights. The earth can be cut from both ends of this if it is present. My last post refers to the supply earth which you have hanging from the ceiling.

help connecting a halogen ceiling light track

It most certainly is not. Where did you get this from? As the light unit/transformer does not require an earth, this wire can be left unconnected, BUT DO NOT cut it off flush with the outer sleeving. Somebody may need it in the future. Ensure it is covered with earth sleeving (an bit of...

    WHICH DRILL TO USE??

Cordless really aren't up to drilling masonry. I know most have hammer action, but you'll find it's very slow, severe on battery and drill. One or two holes no problem, but if you are drilling more than this, you'll have to hire something more suitable, like a generator!

protecting a leather sofa from heat

I dont know about the reflective material idea, might not be the best. What about a radiator cabinet. I suppose you could fit a sheet of very thin mdf or fibre board to the rad but this may not suit your paticular set-up. It would probably reduce heat output from the rad a little also.

    degree

i once sent an apprentice of my own to a job interview (i mentioned him here before, lets just say we had problems and he was just not cut out for the work) I knew one of the interview panel who i spoke to afterwards. My apprentice was asked: where do you see yourself in 5 years time? He...

One piece of advice - DO THE DEGREE, Almost 40 years ago now, I was in exactly the same situation. Under severe duress, I completed an honours degree in electrical/electronic engineering. Finished that and qualified (via apprenticeship - completely separate to degree) as an industrial...

    Bulbs constantly blowing

AFT correction is a new technology which will be introduced in Ireland in the "coming years" . It involves the taps on a transformer, along with many other components, being computer controlled. One of the main aims of this system is to prevent excessive voltage fluctuations with load. In...

    Bulbs constantly blowing

As your new here, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, I am the area engineer with the only electricity company here, the ESB  As you can probably imagine, It is extremely difficult to accurately calculate the exact voltage that is going to be produced at the end of a transformer...
