    Programmable Thermostat

Not heasr that word for a while :-) Sorry, I wasn't meaning to sound like I was judging someone's else's choice of temperature. People should run it at whatever temp they find comfortable or they need. We are all different

    ting a FitSalamander pump

I'm midway through installing a pump. I haven't paid a plumber for a job for many years, so can't really comment on the costs, though I'd probably expect it to be more than £100 from what I hear of charges for things. It's not a difficult job in principle (like many things!) , but there are...

    Programmable Thermostat

What temp you find comfortable seems very much down to habituation (within limits), as well as personal physiology, activity, age etc.. Our basic indoor temp is 18C or so. and I find that fine. Sitting her in the kitchen with a T shirt on. If I go to my parents house it always seems sweltering...

    Advice on Electric Heaters

What temp is 'cool' for you? don't worry, babies rarely suffer from it being too cold in house. Babies don't need it particularly warm, indeed, being too hot is one of the increased risk factors for SIDS. Recommendations seem to generally be in the range of 16 - 20C for a babies room. We don't...

    Thermostat Question

It does rather sound like this isn't really the right product for her. Programmable stats often don't have an obvious on/off switch - seems to be hidden away with a couple of button presses. The idea is that you might just do this in the summer etc. So there is no way really for her to be able...

    Wifi central heating control

Though it appears that the Heatmiser protocol is documented, and there are open source projects for it. Voice controlled CH anyone :-)

    Wifi central heating control

I did read up about this, as I quite like a good tinker. But it's not that straightforward, esp. interfacing to a thermostat (though people have taken a whole bunch of approaches, including individual room control). Sometime though it's good to just have something that works. Or something...

    Central Heating problem

Well, if you have a gravity fed HW system you shouldn't have a 3 port valve anyway (it's used in a fully pumped system to switch the hot water from the boiler between the heating the HW tank and the CH) It would look something like this...

    Wifi central heating control

Most of what we have nowadays isn't neccessary - certainly not central heating, so really, neccesity isn't much of a useful criteria. Surely in this context things like, is it useful, does it make my life easier/nicer/more comfortable, does it save me money, does it save me wasting energy etc...

    Siadaw shower service kit.

According to Companies House, they are in liquidation. . don't seem to be able to link directly to the results, but if you search on their name here, and use the enhanced index you will get it: http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk//wcframe?name=accessCompanyInfo

Replace existing wall timer with evotouch relay BDR91

Yup, that looks right to me. And yes, the BDR91 will be happy switching 230V

    Wifi central heating control

I've been considering such things. What I am wary about with the Owl and BG products is that they seem to rely on a server elsewhere on the internet for controlling the the thermostat. This has probably has advantages in terms of easier settup and ease of changing/improving the web interface...

    Heat loss calculator

not used any of the online ones - presumably they are making some slightly different assumptions about things? I do have somewhere a copy of the the old Myson programme they produced (dunno if they still do), though back in the day when I did the CH in the old house I did it with a little...

Heating Design Advice: Combination or Separate

Having had both a conventional stored HW system, then a combi ,in the old house and now in this house a conventional stored system again I can't say I think that the differing maintenance costs are are an issue really. Yeah, combis are a bit more complicated, but then modern boilers anyway are...

    Unvented Hot water cylinder instalation

No experience of these tanks, but IME your assumption is faulty. Certainly going by the piece of rubbish Hotpoint dishwasher I recently binned and the Bosch that replaced it.

Advice regarding balancing of small system

I found using an IR thermometer was easier/quicker (not unimportant for balancing rads), and seemed accurate compared to a contact one I had around. though because of the varying emissivity of the surfaces you might aim it at (old pipe, painted pipe, shiny chrome, painted rad etc.) putting a...

shower trays with low profile or not!?

Well assuming that the plumber checks/redoes the waste pipe as necessary, then it ought to be fine. Really the pipe should not be the limiting factor here, as eventually the shower tray would fill up anyway (our problem with the waste on the current shower is I think that it hasn't enough fall -...

    conservatory heating

Well, a lot depends on how you use it as well. We just use a fan heater in ours. It heats it up quickly when ever we want to use it. (it does have a rad as well, but don't use it very often. The fan heat works better for us). I'm not really bothered about cooling it, if it does get too hot...

shower trays with low profile or not!?

The main thing is to make sure you have a high flow waste, (they often come with one included anyway it seems) and that the waste pipe is properly installed so that it drains quickly. Any shower tray needs to drain properly, but I guess with a low profile tray there is less scope for error...
