Halogen bulb blew, tripped, now won't power back up

So SELVIS is dead then...?! .... and that's probably the last sensible thing George Michael said too! (Sorry, just getting into the bacardi & cokes while reading these - Merry Christmas!)

    Capping

Sorry guys, just to clarify what JohnD referred to.. ANY metallic conduit, capping etc must be earthed just as odd lengths of pipe have to be bonded when separated by pushfit etc. The purpose IS mechanical protection but (and I always love this!) the regs say "Note, the requirement to prevent...

    quoting for a CU change

Interesting post - I've been caught out two or three times this way where a job looks straightforward, but then.... How do you charge for this? I don't know whether anyone read the recent Which? report on electricians charges but a serious negative element was any charging for estimates etc...

Halogen bulb blew, tripped, now won't power back up

PS if they really are only six months old they will still be under guarantee and so should the electrician's work.

Halogen bulb blew, tripped, now won't power back up

Now check for loose connections or damaged insulation. If you're confident to do this yourself, first isolate the circuit by switching off at the consumer unit, then check the connections in the switch. Make sure that the other switch on the 'double' switch is on the same circuit and is 'dead'...

    Light circuit tripping RCD

Have you checked the connections and final links to the lamp holders? It is very common for the conductor insulation to become brittle and degraded by the heat of the lamps (you say 6-7 years old)

    New Oven & Hob wiring

I thought the purpose of these postings was to re-assure the poster that he has not just gone and made an expensive mistake. I think we've now beaten it to death! Yes, he can connect to the exisitng single circuit - he didn't want to unecessarily spoil existing decorations by putting in an...

    New Oven & Hob wiring

Yep, I'll go with that too except that if there is a 13amp socket on the cooker switch don't use that one for the oven.

    insulation over wires or not?

Yes. It sounds like exisitng in Reference method 1 (clipped direct). I cross referenced this with the building regs as the on-site guide just gives you the tables and guidance. Ref methods 6 & 15 respectively are cables or cables in trunking "in contact with a thermally conducting surface on one...

    Insulation

Hi, Phil & Big Spark, I'm new to the forum but hope I can add my few pence worth - I've just been looking at another topic regarding insulating a shed... As BS says insulation is insulation, HOWEVER, scratching my head a bit i re-read the items in building and wiring regs. The de-rating...

    New Oven & Hob wiring

Sorry, I should have added that the calculation assumes no other de-rating factors apply to the cable. Typically, cable surrounded by insulation has to be substantially de-rated. Hopefully this is not the case. Basic rule for any circuit is design current must be less than or equal to nominal...

    New Oven & Hob wiring

This is a bit cart before the horse, but you may be in luck. The power rating of your hob is 6.6Kw, therefore load is 29amps. The oven is 4.4Kw, therefore 19amps (formula is power divided by volts, eg 4400 div by 230 = 19.1amps) Fortunately when calculating design current we apply...

    insulation over wires or not?

Blimey, I haven't seen so many handbags out since monty python did the battle of hastings! Nice to see reference to the regs, of not much detail. I bet the poor bloke with the shed wished he'd never asked! Cable surrounded by insulation for more than 0.5m must be derated by 50%, ie a 20amp...
