    Concrete asbestos garage roof.

Probably not - I'd be worried about the angle grinder nudging into the sheet too...I'd create a right wasps nest of the stuff then! I had a quick 'feel' of the wood earlier and it's quite soft and is starting to break up a little - possible that rot has set in over the years (the doors of the...

    Concrete asbestos garage roof.

Yes - I'll be covered head to toe in overalls (including hood), a 'proper' mask, gloves, goggles...and the clothing underneath, I'll 'bin' alongside the overalls and sheeting. The sheets should lift out ok, though I'll probably have to wrap into sheeting and snap in half as described above...

    Concrete asbestos garage roof.

Hi all, Sorry to drag this one up from the past, but I'm looking at carrying the job out this weekend (we've finally got a new shed erected so we can take this garage down). This was answered well enough for me to stop flapping and be happy enough to carry it out. I have the full body suit...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

BTW ^^ You can see that void behind the boards butting up to the window - previously UPVC covers and trims were used for this (the 'new' windows must've been smaller than the original bay ones I guess). I'm presuming I can purchase new cover trims and adhere them to the rear of the boards...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

Bit of a pain in the a$$ update... I've ordered a bevel, but it probably won't turn up till tomorrow. In the meantime I tried the original method of placing the boards on top of each other on the sill (left and right underneath the front). Where these bisect I marked up the bullnose. From...

    Chimney Breast plan/thoughts.

Ahh - 140mm height! Therefore taking two courses of bricks out. Makes complete sense now. I won't be attempting this for a couple of weeks but I'll post updates as and when. Pretty sure a local place hire those acrow strongboys out. Thanks for the advice and tips. From what I've read, I...

    Chimney Breast plan/thoughts.

Thanks - I'll pop down the local builders merchants and grab one from there. I'm a tad confused with the depth issue: 140mm is one inch deeper than half a brick - so, am I looking at the lintel sticking one inch out of the wall (slightly less actually as there's the mortar) - otherwise I'll...

    Chimney Breast plan/thoughts.

I do tend to ramble! I need my own personal forum editor :) Well, I want to take the opening as wide as you can see the 'arch brickwork' - one and half bricks wider than the opening (you can easily see the outline of this on the picture). Would the width of the lintel have to be much wider...

    Chimney Breast plan/thoughts.

Hi all, I was seriously contemplating taking down a chimney from loft downwards. As space is a little tight in the dining room (doubles up as 2nd living room/guest room) I wanted to add TV to breast wall (sunk in) which would mean building a stud out of the existing breast. Doing this...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

Parallel line being the front edge of the central board, a line which will extend into the left (and right) board - then do the same on the front edge of the left and right board. Tried this quickly on 3 pieces of paper - the angle seems to be around 140 degrees ('ball park figure') - does that...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

Putty? Madras? Dark Velvet curtaining?! :) Nope...struggling with that explanation...I think! I'm placing the boards like this below. The point where they bisect is where I'll mark on the front of the boards - this is the bullnose however, and I'm not sure I can exactly follow that round...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

I've got some of the pink ex foam...can't say it's a joy to use. I managed to get a small dab on a chair and the veneer will come up before that stuff does. I've added some underneath the front of the board, but you're right in that you can see it would push the boards up (I'd strapped the...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

Haha - so it really is another piece of terminology I need to consider (should I be in the 'Sussex' area :) ) Cheers. One more thing - can anyone let me know how to best mark the bisect angles when placing the bay windows boards on the sill? I'm placing the left and right boards down (cut...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

Pug? I'm hoping that's a typo otherwise it's something else for me to worry about! Pre drill - as in the underside for the brackets/straps? With regard to the bay windows, I've reset the bricks as level as possible, but there's still the issue of the brickwork (outer leaf) under the windows...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

Your post on that original thread was a god send/angel etc etc noseall! Soooo pleased I happened upon it as I really wasn't doing too well with the other method. I think given the sheer 'unlevelness' of what I'm working with, that method was perhaps a little too ambitious for me...lack of...

Ooh gawd...think I've discovered a better windowboard method

I'm currently fitting new windowboards around the house (slowly but surely). After a fair bit of help and research I chose a method and set to task. The old boards had been covered in UPVC, which in itself looked a bit of a rushed job. Unfortunately, the wood boards underneath were damaged...

    Drop/stud ceilings.

Little update: I'm going to make the size of the 'drop box ceiling' smaller than originally intended - 4'x2' rather than 6'3'. Mocked up a piece with some spare MDF and it works better at that size. Quick question (someone who's been helping me no this is 'lockdown busy' at the...

    Window boards on bay windows.

Well, I'm going to fit some battens to the rear of all the boards which will make the rears roughly level with the front masonry sill (the rear masonry sill being approx an inch lower). I guess I can then pack the boards so they are level all around...not sure how I would temp secure them to be...

    Window boards on bay windows.

Yes - thanks all - will use the front board on top of the side boards to bisect the angles...makes complete sense really. I was perhaps veering into skirting territory (where the verticals come into play...or mischief depending!). Rough mock up, but this is how I understand it....just need...

    Window boards on bay windows.

Hi, I've had a great deal of helpful advice on replacing some old window boards in my house. Not at all straightforwrd (not that I expect anything to run smoothly!) but I've found a method I'm going to use. The section I'm little unsure on is the bay window boards (the others are just...
