    house earthing system

I posted a question some weeks ago where I found a light fitting with no mains earthing available the earth and neutral had been bridged. As there was no earth on the lighting circuit they seem to have used this as an alternative method of protection. Although the practice it was agreed was...

    Houses With Multiple Occupancy

Does anyone know what the regulations are affecting electrical installations in an HMO and when it all comes into force? There seems to be a great deal of confusion in the LBAs.

Securing Cable Clips to plaster and mortar

Has anyone any tips on the best way to secure cables to crumbling mortar and plasterwork? Mine keep coming away and make it difficult to plaster up afterwards.

    France - sockets

So does a converter plug compensate for the polarity reverse when using British appliances in Europe?

    France - sockets

My friend is wiring a socket in a utility room in france and has called me to ask a question. The socket has no markings on it to indicate the polarity. Which way around should the hot (He's American) and neutral be wired?

    Chrome light - no earth?

The plot thickens. No RCD just a plug in MCB that tripped. Just going back a stage...... which is more dangerous, no earth or bridged earth/neutral?

    Chrome light - no earth?

So that explains it. The builder's numpty head was probably and immigrant of some sort? Does this not mean though that the whole light fitting becomes part of the circuit and therefore an exposed conductor? Is that not then dangerous if within reach? What part of 16th Ed would clarify this?

    how hot

The whole argument could be futile anyway if the ODPM gets their way on temperature regulators for taps. If you want a good argument Poshman as a reason for a divorce then do it before the ODPM sets the standard 'cos then you'll have no argument.

    Chrome light - no earth?

Thanks guys. The 'common practice' comment about the Neutral/Earth bridge was tongue in cheek obviously!! This isn't my house it belongs to a friend who happened to call me in 'cos he thought he had a problem witha light fitting. Turns out he didn't have the problem he thought he had but a...

    Chrome light - no earth?

I have just uncovered a chrome light fitting and discovered that the lighting system has no earth. The previous occupant of the property has linked the earth for the light fitting to the neutral cable coming into the fitting????? Is this normal practice? Is there any way of earthing the...

    Proximity to kitchen sink

Paul As far as I am aware there is nothing in the regs regarding thermostats, however there is something about sockets. As the stat works from mains 240v power as well I would work ona similar basis. The regs RECOMMEND (not stipulate) that a socket is not sited within 300mm of a sink...

    PFC Reading

The measurement was taken at the point of entry to the property. I'm not sure how far away the substation is. This property is not in the country, in fact it's only 2 miles from the city centre. I did a reading for another property recently that was just short of the maximum 16KA. I assume...

    PFC Reading

Is 3.16KA a very low reading for PFC. Is there likely to be a problem or am I reading it wrong?

Heh hey... genius!!! We can all put our coats back. Your powers never cease to amaze me BAS. I preferred the first response though (IHNFI) It showed a greater degree of humanoid falability.

    Resistance calc

Thanks for the hands up. Still curious to know is where you got 24.35 from? Or was it just a guess?
  18. N

    Resistance calc

Thanks for that. As both Albert and BAS pointed out and I had already noticed after posting the decimal point was a little astray. It should have been been on Ohms not MOhms. I still don't understand where your 24.35 comes from in your original posting?
