You don't get a second chance!

Mickeymoody, if you are bending that many nails then one of two things are probably the case - a) you have an incredibly bad aim or b) your hammer has developed a convex rounded head so that it slips sideways when it strikes the nail unless hit dead centre.

You don't get a second chance!

Mickeymoody asks about a manual nail holder. I use a pair of pliers to hold a nail when I think that there is any chance of missing with a heavy hammer. (I don't bother when I'm using the pin hammer on tacks.)

Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die!

JRPlastering. There is no need to spend £2000 on legal fees. Get probate which costs less than £100. You will then have a court order that you can give the insurance company (or any other financial institution) requiring them to give you the money. I went through this process after my mother...

    Terrifying DIY

I thought we bought a bungalow with a serious problem. After moving in, we asked British Gas to test everything before using it. The chap looked at the gas fire in the sitting room, which the previous owner had obviously put in himself, and immediately condemned it. Firstly, it was too...

    Semi Conversion of garage

You might be interested in what I did a couple of years ago. I have an integral garage to my bungalow and wanted to use it as a hobby room but easily converted back to a garage. I fixed 50mm polystyrene sheets over the garage door and then fixed 18mm chipboard over that. This was screwed to...

Please help me choose some blades for my jigsaw....

18mm MDF or chipboard is rather thick for a DIY jigsaw. If you are going to use it on them, then I think that you should take it very slowly and perhaps even switch off every few minutes to let it cool down.

    Floating Floor

I have an large integral garage with my bungalow which is about a 15cm step down from the rest of the property. I wanted to make one end of it into an office at the same level as the other rooms. I laid timber like rafters 50cm apart across the floor of the garage and then screwed 18mm chipboard...

    Sheds and Shed Bases

Why not use paving slabs? I have a shed on paving slabs laid on about half an inch of sand over bare earth which had beed pummled hard. There have been no problems for several years.

Removing (black mastic) marks from a brick wall.

Can anyone please help with this problem? My wife and I bought our retirement bungalow 13 years ago which had a not very good, home-made conservatory attached to the back. For several reasons, after a few years we decided to remove it. The basic process was reasonably easy. Everything is...

    cocrete base outdoor

I suggest that 50mm thick paving slabs are perfectly OK for a garden shed and reasonably cheap. It's what my shed has been put on and I've had no trouble for years.

    Grinding back of a toilet

Thanks for the advice. I have chickened out of doing the grinding. Wife would play hell with me if anything went wrong. (I was intending to do it when she was out shopping all day.) I'm sure that if I suggested it beforehand she would hit the roof! I have found a way to disguise the wood at...

    Grinding back of a toilet

Is it possible to grind away a small part of the back of a normal (porcelain?) toilet?. Without a diagram it is difficult to explain why I want to do this. I have had a new modern toilet installed using the existing hole in the floor of my bungalow bathroom as the waste exit. This has meant...
