Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

Burnerman, sadly I don't know anybody with electrical expertise or equipment (other than an actual electrician, £££). So at 1pm I decided to give the "free estimate" people a chance to look & diagnose but of the three I found, none can come before Mon pm and the most promising one not till Tues...

Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

I now know far more about washing machines than is good for someone in their late 60s! Thanks, Flameport (re drain hose goes above drum level); I had wondered about this and next time (hah!) I won't make such a mess. Bilabong007, I feel I have gone as far as I can. I'm OK with hoses but am not...

Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

Good idea to check the full path from drum to pump. The pump itself was clear. Actually inside the rubber 'gravity trap', post-drum, pre-pump, I found a small length (60mm x 2mm, not round in section; more a sliver) of slightly corroded metal. I have absolutely no idea where this came from but...

Seriously puzzled after investigating washing machine not draining. Pls Help!

Bizarre! Please keep us posted on this. (I am having a similar problem with my Hoover WM.) Edit: Sorry, just seen you're no longer using the machine. Cannot see how to delete this post, alas.

Help with cleaning / repairing my washing machine

Thanks, Burnerman. I will look at AO.com etc, though cash limitations is going to be the problem. (I am a pensioner.) The fixed-price call out appears to be around £50. How much for parts pepends what the problem is, I suppose.. A 'universal pump' costs £20. A new machine seems to be upwards of...

Help with cleaning / repairing my washing machine

I may end up doing that! I am out of ideas now and the last thing I want to do is flood my nice downstairs neighours. I've done a quick internet search and there are some appliance people who will come and have a look for a fixed price that then includes the cost of installing whatever's...

Help with cleaning / repairing my washing machine

Thanks, Burnerman. Well, I managed to get the flexible 'gravity trap' hose off the pump and have a look inside. Pictures attached. The pump blades can be seen via my bathroom mirror. They appear to be clear and can be rotated fairly easily with a finger tip. Each blade feels slightly stiff but...

Help with cleaning / repairing my washing machine

My 2005-vintage Hoover Performa 1100 washer dryer* (used once per week) has always worked well but last week it became unable to pump its water out completely. It therefore will not spin either. After some online research, it seems likely that the pump is either clogged or broken. On this...

    Non-functional cistern

Hmm, that screwfix kit looks utterly diferent from the innards of my cistern. Not sure which bits to throw away and which bits to keep. I've discovered this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4AdckesOlg , which looks promising but suggests that the cistern has to come off the wall (and...

    Non-functional cistern

Thanks, all. Paul, it's a lever flush. Hugh, Andy, Charnwood: Which bit is the siphon? Where is the washer? Sorry to be so challenged. Here are some images: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/195/flush3.jpg/ and http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/535/flush4.jpg/

    Non-functional cistern

Loo cistern (vintage 80s, 90s?) fills & cuts off normally. It used to do a fine job but recently began flushing only about 30% of the time. When it does flush it is perfect. The rest of the time you depress the handle and it goes down normally but only about a cupful of water comes out into...

    Ladder for my skylight

This sounds both pleasantly low-tech and relatively simple to do, though the ladder would still have fold or slide smoothly and easily, since the room is only 6ft wide and the distance to the rim of the skylight is about 9ft. My clunky aluminium decorating ladder does slide but only with the...

    Ladder for my skylight

I have a skylight directly in the ceiling of my study. It's openable and large enough to admit a person. It leads on to a flat (leaded, walk-worthy, safe) roof where I want to sit on fine evenings. The ceiling height is about 9ft. Question: is there a kind of folding ladder that will...
