Best approach to making a hole in sink unit?

Thanks both! I really should have thought of clamping on an extra bit of wood - that would have worked nicely. Quite right about never seeing it again so I wasn't too worried about finish, just about whether the drill would cope. In the end I needed to shuffle the pipework around a bit, and...

Best approach to making a hole in sink unit?

I need to make a hole for solvent weld pipe, and it needs to be in an awkward part of the sink unit back panel, where a stiffener panel overlaps with the backing. I plan a 76mm hole, and the centre point will likely be just above where the bottom of the panel is. The first photo shows the back...

Tile from middle of room, or middle of door?

I make a scale plan on a pad of gridded graph paper, then print a grid scaled to the tiles on a piece of inkjet acetate film. Then just slide the acetate over your paper plan until happy with the position.

'fixed' roof leak around chimney has reappeared

Thanks both. The leadwork looks reasonably good to me as a layman. I did wonder about wind blowing in, as the leak is not consistent and particularly high volume. Here are another couple of internal pictures that suggest it might be brickwork or the top of the chimney letting water in...

'fixed' roof leak around chimney has reappeared

A friend had a leak in the roof that appeared to be from around the chimney. He had a chap in before Christmas who "did a bit of pointing/re-sealing around the chimney that he thought would solve the problem." With the weather this week, the problem is back. Any thoughts on what the likely...

Socket in the way of new wall - how to handle?

A quick update: There was about 15cm clearance from the steel, and @trojanhawrs was right, the cables would not come up (double bend around the edge of the joist). I opened the chase, removed the cables and took them up into the ceiling space; replastered the chase, header and footer plates...

Socket in the way of new wall - how to handle?

Thanks all for the further thoughts. It does look like the best option is to mount the socket in the stud wall (and possibly have sockets both sides). I think the wall (and therefore the cable drop) will be slightly in front of the steel - I think its far enough away from the line of the wall...

Socket in the way of new wall - how to handle?

The joists are parallel to the wall. That one to the left is just on the edge of the masonry wall (an external wall) that has the socket in, and which supports that steel. I think the cable disappearing into the top of the joist by the steel is going to sockets in the bedroom above.

Socket in the way of new wall - how to handle?

Thanks all. What about taking the cables up from that existing socket, dropping them down on the line of the old wall position (where the brown wood is in the first photo), fitting a new double socket there, then extending that horizontally to the right past the new wall to and adding a double...

Socket in the way of new wall - how to handle?

I am moving a stud wall to a position where there is a single socket in just the wrong place, with an 80-90% overlap with where I want the wall. (In the photo below the new position of the wall is shown by the two higher pencil marks near the socket. The cables to the socket are in a chase...

How best to rearrange kitchen sink plumbing

Thank you! I've been over complicating this in my head, and you've helped immensely. I just move the waste back a bit (solvent weld) and bring it up the service void then through the back of the unit at a suitable height to clear the drawer and be able to take the sink connections and...

How best to rearrange kitchen sink plumbing

Thanks all. Yes, it is a purpose designed unit with a cut out. Its the dishwasher waste that has me scratching my head a bit, particularly how high up it can connect into the sink waste? Would it be ok to direct that straight to the waste separately to the sink, rather than bringing it into...

How best to rearrange kitchen sink plumbing

I am putting in a new kitchen, with the sink unit containing drawers rather than the usual cupboard. (I know... but SWMBO...). This is going to necessitate the pipework coming up inside the 42mm service void at the back. The current pipework is forward of this, so will need to move backward...

    floor transition across block wall

We have joined two rooms by taking down a block wall and are preparing to lay nomoreply over the whole space prior to tiling. For most of the length of the transistion the two floors are level with each other, but at one end there is a section approx 3ft long where the boards on one side (the...

    Charity bags

If you look them up on Companies House and Charity Commission websites, you'd be amazed how often the collecting companies are linked to Lithuanian nationals, and the charities involved are small, non-significant players.

Cavity Wall Insulation – worth the risk?

We had Cavity wall insulation installed in our substantial 4-bed detached under a govt scheme some years ago. We likely would not qualify these days, but we contributed £60 to the job (we were over the specific limits of the scheme) and I reckon we recouped that in energy costs in the first...

Mounting an external socket on uneven wall

Thanks all, some food for thought there. I'll have a close look at the wall and see what degree of un-flatness needs to be coped with, and adapt from all your helpful suggestions. Aesthetics are of course always a consideration, but the particular location I have in mind is not too exposed, so...

Mounting an external socket on uneven wall

Thank you. I'd not thought of using spacers; that will be easier than using a back board of some kind, and will undoubtedly look better too.
