Just remember, air will always rise the the high points just like the bubble in a spirit level unless you have means to release that air you have a problem, look for those high points, the coil in the cylinder is one and can prove difficult to remove, many of us heating engineers have our ways...

So its a soldered cap then, if it was a compression fitting you could just loosen it a bit to release the air.

Turn your CH off and HW on, turn your boiler thermostat to MAX this might force the air out of the open vent.

The pipe on the left of boiler is HW flow the pipe on right hand side with pump is CH flow.

Your picture shows the pump fitted in the HW return, can you check as it should be in the CH.

As said by others you probably have a gravity HW system, if so you will NOT have a thermostat strapped to the side of the HW cylinder and your pump wont run when you select HW only, is that the case?

Probably wouldn't make any difference if system was drained or not, valve might get tight due to lack of use long-term.
