    Pump speed/Automatic bypass valve setting.

    I will admit I didn't know that, the OP's is a UPS215-50/60 model which I know isn't variable speed.

Is it safe to leave central heating system empty?

They were a good boiler in their day, I had one myself, if I remember rightly they had paper gaskets on the heat exchanger side plates, never came across one that leaked.

Is it safe to leave central heating system empty?

What boiler have you got? You shouldn't have any problems with your system but some boiler years ago which has rubber gaskets on the manifolds were prone to leak if left for a few months drained down.

What's this part called and should the black bit be tight?

Im working on the assumption that your was loose that why you were able to knock it off so easily.

    Pump speed/Automatic bypass valve setting.

As far as Im aware the UPS model only has 3 speeds I think on the older models you could remove a screw from the inlet port which gave you a slightly better flow on each of the speeds, dont know if the newer models have that also but their not variable.

What's this part called and should the black bit be tight?

Black cap needs to be loose or the auto air vent wont work.

Your pump is a standard UPS2 15-50/60 3 speed pump it the Alpha2 model which is variable speed.

New Boiler - Poor Heating - No Hot water.

Did you not get any type of guarantee/warrenty from the installers, TRV's are a good idea but are not mandatory since some muppets in our government removed the requirement from Part L of the building regs in 2006.

    Testing a 3 port valve.

What make is it, if the motor had failed I would expect you to get HW but no Heating.

    Hot radiator

I totally agree with BWC, have a TRV fitted to that rad and turn it to a low setting during the summer, some people love to be able to warm their towels even in summer but your plumber should have discussed the pros and cons with you before going ahead.

    Hot radiator

Is there a pipe tee'd out of the flow pipe between the pump and 3 port valve, if so I would think its supplying that radiator which would therefore get hot when heating or HW were called for.

Ideal Isar HE24 hot water woes

Another one bites the dust hopefully, why would anyone claim to have been involved with that boilers development and expect any engineer to give him an ounce of respect ?

Ideal Isar HE24 hot water woes

The auto air vent are prone to scale up and not work, only thing is it located in the boilers balanced compartment behind the flue on the R/H side and you need a GSR engineer to check it.

    Hot radiator

Your system could be designed that way as it just the bathroom rad getting hot, if your 3 port valve is letting by you could check to see if the heating pipework is getting hot a few feet away from the valve when you know your boiler is operating to heat just the water, I would think your loss...

Help can anyone recommend a good extinguisher, my sink unit is on fire.......:-)

    Condensate pipe

You still have a condense trap, the auto syphon type can & do still freeze up in extreme cold weather, the drfference is a standard trap will dribble where as the auto syphon flushes a small amount in one go the theory being its less likely to freeze that way.

    Dismantling plastic pipe

No as it melts the joint together just like an airfix kit lol

Valiant Ecotec 837 - no hot water.

Thanks for the update, the 837 is much the same boiler but does not have the 15 ltr storage tank.

Tried to do plumbing but failed

As you had turned the mains off and you kitchen tap had stopped running I suspect you cut the right pipe but the water was just that which remained in the pipework feeding your tanks in the roof space etc, had you turned the hot taps on for a short while to make the ball valve drop and let air...
