    Self Build Scaffolding

Haha nothing wrong with a bit of Mumbai scaffolding:-) Might use 6x2 and 4x4s timbers or something round the back and buy a proper £300 tower for the front to ward off any pesky HSE busybodies!

    Self Build Scaffolding

Am in the early stages of planning an extension and I'm wondering what to do about scaffolding. I want to do it all myself without using tradesmen where possible. What kind of scaffolding systems would be OK to use? 1) 'Proper' scaffolding, rented and built by a professional. Expensive and I'd...

Extend in place of linked detached garage

It would have been spotted in the design process eventually. I've not even bought the house yet ;-) But now that Woody pointed it out I can start figuring out how I'm going to cope with loading that metre extension on the front.

Extend in place of linked detached garage

I had originally planned a set back and a ridge line drop, however looking at the other houses that have extended on the street (the last one was 2011), none of them have set theirs back or even dropped the ridge line. I was surprised at this, as I'd read online these things usually cause...

Extend in place of linked detached garage

Pictures paint a thousand words (ours, after proposed extension, on the right):

Large RSJ padstones flush with wall

Yep sorry I meant both the padstone and the nib below it being built up to 50mm in the cavity, should 150mm be necessary (5.5m does sound like quite a wide span after all)

Large RSJ padstones flush with wall

Ahh OK that's great then. I've seen plans where the SE has recommended a 150mm support from the padstones and that had me a bit worried. If they did recommend 140-150mm, could I build those into the cavity (which I'm hoping is 100mm) rather than project into the habitable room?

Extend in place of linked detached garage

OK thanks - so the terracing thing could be an issue, subject to current policy. How about the effective conversion of a linked detached into a fully detached? Are planners likely to take issue with that?

Extend in place of linked detached garage

There are a few houses on my road that have done this, so definitely precedent had been established. None of them were previously linked by semi detached garages though. The house opposite me knocked down their garage and built two storey extension. Their roof doesn't even slope towards the...

Large RSJ padstones flush with wall

A planned kitchen extension relies on removing my existing rear wall. The RSJ would span 5500mm and support first floor (possibly joists, not checked yet) and gable-end roof wall, so it's going to be a bit chunky! Is there any way I can make at least one side of the padstones/nib flush with my...

Extend in place of linked detached garage

Am planning on demolishing existing linked detached garage (linked to neighbour's garage) and rebuilding two storey extension in its place (plus single storey wrap around bits not relevant to this question). To avoid any chance of the property becoming a semi-detached in future I was thinking of...

    Advice on opening up fireplace

I've had a good look inside the chimney and cannot find any lintel at all, just 5 courses of horizontal bricks followed by a decorative course of vertical bricks, then I can't really see after that because of the layer of ash. Here: This worries me a bit as I had assumed there was a lintel...

    Advice on opening up fireplace

Update: I've excavated much more to the side now, but not gone any higher. By the time I finished last night I looked like a Victorian chimney-sweep! Instead of doing it properly and renting an Acrow/Strongboy, I've made my own from offcuts of wood and a heavy duty angle bracket: An acrow...

    Advice on opening up fireplace

Ok tomorrow I will excavate further up to the suspected wooden lintel and check it - I cant really get a photo using my mirror/torch arrangement, as I could hardly even see anything anyway with that - which is why I'm probably incorrect about the wooden lintel. I have seen a website (...
