    Roof strut has linear splits

Sorry Noseall for the length between replies I've been away. Yes they are for every truss and in pairs from the apex of the roof. Really all I want to know is if there is a metal brace or something I can use to ensure it doesn't split anymore.

Small holes on underside of floorboard

Sounds like woodworm. It could be that the timber has been treated (Eradicure or something like that) but the treatment didn't penetrate the cavity hence worm on the underside. I had similar problems at my old house which was apparantly fully treated. Having said that it may not mean they...

    Roof strut has linear splits

Not sure I can get much better than these as it is right next to the hatch. As for fixings under strain it doesn't appear so. You can see the loft hatch edge in the foreground and the timber directly above the blu tin is the offending one.

    Roof strut has linear splits

Photo's as promised. Not as clear as I would have liked but I was limited for space. The ruler is a 30cm one and the larger split appears on both sides of the joist. This last one just about shows the second split just above the first though I admit it looks like wood grain on...

    Stair Fixings

Thanks Chaps. Unfortunately due to time constraints (the Wife) I have had to go ahead and install the stairs without newell posts and they went fine. I know this will cause problems when fitting bannisters but hey ho. I used the idea of the brackets non wall side top and bottom and it worked...

    Stair Fixings

Yes eventually. Something simple but if possible I would like to add it later due to financial constraints. I also have a floor to lay first but that I can manage. I will ideally have a banister and full railings round the top landing sweeping down one side of the stairs.

    Is this newell post safe?

Having seen this it has me worried a little regarding my project. As I stated in my earlier topic I am replacing my stairs. By the look of Kings photo's his top Newell goes from the upper level right down to the ground floor. Should I have one like this or is there another way of securing the...

    Stair Fixings

I have bought a pre assembled staircase and am fitting it into a well that is open on one side. The bottom is to a concrete floor and the upper floor is wooden. What fixings and method of fixing should I use?
