    Corner block issue

Extension underway. I have decided to incorporate a water pipe upgrade that will go into the extension rather than the existing house to avoid drains and digging up driveway. Only trouble is, because we didn't know exactly where it should enter, having met with the water pipe company today, it...

Mortar Bed thickness - too thick?

Hi all, Extension is progressing. I've noticed at the tip of the concrete blocks where the engineering bricks being that there is an area where the mortar bed is really thick. Looks about an inch thick, presumably to make up for some unevenness in the blocks below. How thick is too thick in...

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

We are talking about max fall, or depth, without a vent.

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

I wonder if it is to do with preventing a vacuum as the waste travels down through the pipe? 1.3m possibly being the maximum vertical fall after which water will start getting sucked out of toilet and sink traps? Basically because waste matter filling the pipe pushes the air ahead of it and...

Don't suppose you have a link? I can't find one on Google

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

Nose, My builder has bedded the chamber bases on pea gravel (beneath which is clay ground). Are you saying concrete is definitely a must? Ps. These chambers are the big 450mm ones and the branches are all higher than the main inlet and outlet.

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

So we are achieving 1/60 on the foul drain line. Just shy of 17mm fall per metre when measured. By the looks of it, you can be allowed to have less so that is reassuring. Flow works based on test. Although I've noticed some residual water does sit at the bottom of the plastic inspection chambers...

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

Thanks Hugh. This 1.3m depth... you can see the open ended pipe the toilet will connect to, where is the lowest point counted as - the horizontal run of orange pipe or the chamber it is going to? Why is 1.3m important, what would 1.5m cause? Also, sorry to throw in another question, am I...

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

I have an existing toilet in an ensuite where a so called question mark connector had to be used to achieve a right angle at the back of the toilet, and then concertina ****e was used as part of the waste connection because some flexibility was needed in a tight spot. It doesn't flush as well as...

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

So the one vented soil pipe already there is sufficient? I don't mind the stack being outside and even prefer it, but not if it is too tall. My builder suggested 1m high but that was because he assumed it needs a vent on it, a special one that let's air in but not out. The stack can be quite...

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

But my main question is: does the new toilet waste pipe need to be vented or is the existing soil pipe sufficient? Incidentally, I don't really want the stack on the inside taking up room and I don't want any right angles in the waste pipe. I want a straight connection out the back for a more...

    Waste Pipe Vent or No?

Hi all! I've attached a plan below. Side extension is being built, it includes a WC. Toilet waste pipe will go straight out the wall and then down into the ground on the outside. I want to avoid an unsightly stack on what will be the front of the house extension. So preference is a low sub...

Wet area - concrete pour, footings - help

Thanks Nose. Concrete went in at 11am this morning. No major downpours forecast so far . What is forecast is low temperatures over night. Down to 1 centigrade in the early hours, and zero at around 6am tomorrow. Do we need to cover the footings over with boards? Currently enjoying a balmy 8C...

Wet area - concrete pour, footings - help

Sorry to be a pain, but I just want to make sure we are doing things properly. Once this concrete goes in and the extension is built on top of it, it won't be easy to fix if there's a problem with poor concrete at the bottom in that corner! Concrete footings are being poured tmw now. As I say...

Repointing advice - style colour etc

Pointing is supposed to be dug out to about 20mm. Spreading new stuff over the surface is a waste of time and will drop off later. And looks ****.

    Resin drive question

The council are obviously not arsed. Say that you don't know when it was done. At least five years ago if anything... up until a recent change, development that was done without permission became immune from planning enforcement action after 4 years. And there's always the insurance, which...

    Resin drive question

My neighbour had it installed recently and his is permeable. To a point anyway. I assume the rain will hit the clay underneath and then the pores will be full of water. I did wonder if this would ever cause it to blow in future with freezing. Impermeable might be better, subject to the water...

Wet area - concrete pour, footings - help

Would it be necessary to throw a wheel barrow of more 'dry' concrete into that corner to begin?

Wet area - concrete pour, footings - help

Hello again. My house extension is under way. The trenches are dug and the concrete is due to be poured tomorrow for the footings. We have got down to a good clay layer that the building inspector is happy with. The only dubious part is at one of the corners. We found a mad, really deep wall...
