    Faulty microswitch in valve?

Virtually ever since we had our central heating system installed 2 years ago we have had an intermittant fault whereby the pump still runs even though the hot water and heating system is turned off. The only way to stop it is by switching off at the power socket in the airing cupboard. Usually...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Hopefully the final update on this saga for those interested We have never found a solution to this long standing problem but I have got used to living with the bleeding and topping up routine. No more dreadful noises thankfully but the pressure just creeps down over time. We had one incident...

    Mushrooms in lawn

Thermo is right. Not much you can do about them. We've had loads this summer on our new lawn. The most important thing is to make sure you pick every single mushroom carefully as soon as you see it - even the tiniest - otherwise they will continue to spread. They just love this damp weather. I...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Bleed the pump Kev?? Again?? I didn't know we'd bled the pump - or am I being a bit dim? :? Talking of the pump..... When the system was first installed (seems like light years ago) our heating guy accidently left the frost stat, in the loft, set way too high and the pump ran continuously for...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Hi guys! Our heating engineer has spoken to Sentinel and Ideal yet again, for inspiration. We've now been advised to keep bleeding rads and topping up for 2 months or so and see whether things eventually improve. They think we've just got stubborn pockets of air. I'm not so sure........... With...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

The dirty water is now improving. It has only occured once, the other day, when, what we think was a large airlock, caused all the pipes and system to shake, rattle & roll. Sounded like someone was moving a large bag of tools around in the loft, followed by a bang. It was quite a dramatic...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Thanks Kev Pressure remains fine at 2 when heating on and about 1.5 when cold. It has dropped a bit since our engineer put the extra air vent in and upped the pressure on the expansion tank. He left it at 2 when cold and 2.5 when hot. I haven't bled the rads as I want him to hear/see it like...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Many thanks Oilman........ I tactfully suggested my heating engineer might like to take a look at all the suggestions I have received on this site for inspiration. He was not offended and is still speaking to us! He seems happy there's not a leak. Tested as you suggested. Fitted an additional...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Have just discovered that if I've run off some hot water ie bath, washing machine etc and then the CH starts for the first time, it is quiet! Can anyone explain? Also - our hot water cylinder has an immersion heater, from when we had the oil boiler system previously, which I don't think I've...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Thanks for your input. I am the eternal optimist - I believe there is a solution to everything so we will just have to keep trying..........

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

The saga continues! Our heating engineer has - following the report on the water sample - taken every rad off, flushed the gunk out and the pipes through. We were amazed at the amount of sludge and the thickness of it considering the system has been Powerflushed twice, drained, refilled...

    Drilling around corners??!

Is there such a gadget that can drill around corners? I have just bought an expensive made to measure blind for the kitchen which fits outside the recess. Took old blind down and filled holes, papered over etc. Can't now fit the new blind because there's a kitchen cupboard in the way (sideways...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Pressure is 2 or 3 notches over 1 bar when cold. System starts getting noisy so I bleed the rad in the bathroom (usually). Pressure drops - top up - pressure back to normal - we're back to square one. The whole cycle starts again usually within 24 - 48 hrs (noise etc) although since all the...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

An update! Have just received water analysis from Purimachos. In brief..... Net chloride 37ppm = corrosive Iron content too high at 9ppm Aluminium too high at 5ppm System is forming scale with moderate mains potential. Is this the answer? Heating engineer flushed system out yet again...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

Thanks for sticking with this guys. The boiler is an Ideal Icos. Yes, it's a sealed system. The item I was referring to that didn't have the correct pressure originally is the expansion vessel (girly description = bright orange object above boiler!). Our heating engineer replaced it eventually...

Our plumber is depressed and suicidal!

In all fairness I must say that our 'plumber' is a Corgi registered heating engineer. Sorry if I implied otherwise. The chap that came from Ideal said he had done a good installation job and it made a change to find Benchmark book filled in properly etc, however, I do feel he's a bit lost now...
