How to install ethernet network in a home?

You'll really need to find someone who's done this before to help you, or you'll spend hours (or days) without getting anywhere. Don't put the switch in the loft, find a cupboard for it. You'll need a small rack for the patch panel or it'll be a horrible, unreliable mess (and require more...

Makita 18v Li-ion battery has just stopped! :(

Li-ion batteries should store for a very long time. Self-discharge is very slow, if the management circuit draws enough current to do harm to the balance, it is faulty. I was, however, referring to total discharge by overuse. This is a strict no-no with li-ion cells and the pack should be...

Makita 18v Li-ion battery has just stopped! :(

A fully discharged li-ion cell is dead. There's no 'often' about it, it is a flat fact. The chemistry cannot survive being totally discharged. No battery should allow this to occur. Makita ones which do are faulty by design.

Won't make any difference to performance. Just your mind playing tricks :)

    Wrong Date On Start Up.

American type? .... Yes, changing the date in Windows will set it permanently. You will find the battery towards the lower right hand side of the board, next to the long pink/purple slots. It simply pulls out of the holder. It's a standard CR2032. Don't put the new one in backwards...

How to get into BIOS Compaq Presario

F10 should be the correct key, you may not be pressing it soon enough. Start continuously tapping the key before you power the machine on. Keep pressing it until you see a message saying it's entering the BIOS, or the BIOS itself. You may also need to try a different keyboard, as some...

You can still buy lead solder!?

Last time I had him around, my plumber carried leaded solder for doing larger joints on heating systems. Simply easier and more reliable when you're working with 28mm and bigger.

    Wall Fixings

52mm is the right size for a single sheet of 12.5mm plasterboard, unless you have an insane amount of plaster over it! You may have to buy longer screws separately depending on how they go through the item you're fixing. I'd definitely use them over the self-driving sort, those rely on...

You can still buy lead solder!?

Of course you can still buy lead solder. You just can't sell a product made with it.

    Adding a second wireless router.

Uhm.. I was talking about PLT and so were you. If you decided to totally change the subject practically mid-sentence that's your own fault.

    Adding a second wireless router.

I'm sorry, where did you find the EIRP of a PLT device with an undefined 'antenna' consisting of the entire jumbled mess of power wiring attached to it? We are not talking about regulated, engineered radiators, we are talking about the unregulated, illegal radiation of poorly thought out...

    Adding a second wireless router.

The interference caused by these devices is nowhere near the typical 2.4GHz of the devices you describe. Whether it affects you or not is immaterial, as the radiation is not confined to your property.

    dell laptop CPU upgrade questions

A T9900 for £20? You're 'avin' a laugh, they go for £50-100. The RAM won't be a problem as the RAM clock is not locked to the FSB. It will simply switch ratio.

    MAC: MAC Address Confusion!

There should be a section titled 'Status' which contains the MAC address.

Recording data diurect to a SD card

No, there's really nothing else you can use. It needs a USB host and, I imagine, their software. You're stuck with that. Those are devices, not hosts....

    MAC: MAC Address Confusion!

If you're looking to use MAC filtering to prevent other devices connecting, be aware that bypassing it takes all of ten seconds. It is in no way useful as a security device.

boiling a cup off water in a kettle or micro cheap or quick

With an induction hob you have to heat the pan first. Plus it will have quite effective thermal conduction to air, wasting yet more energy. It'll be quick, but it also uses a lot of power.

    Lithium battery in DVR?

Seeing as every standard RTC device on the planet is designed to operate from a 3V lithium cell, and an alkaline cell is 1.5V, yes. There's also the small problem that the alkaline will self discharge itself to death in a very short period while the lithium cell can, theoretically, last upwards...
