No door hinge the right size!!

When you say the "fitting" in the door frame, do you mean a 5" by 2" rebate has been cut into the wood of the frame? If so and you end up unable to find hinges of the right size, there is another thing you can do. Use 4" hinges (which are common I believe) and fill the remaining inch with a...

    Loft insulation - cabling issue

This is not expert advice, not even layman's advice, just telling you what my situation is. When I bought this bungalow 13 years ago, the loft had 100mm insulation between the rafters and covering all of the wiring. It had been like that for several years possibly since being built in 1984...

    Cellar conversion

This is somewhat similar to the situation in a house my son bought very recently. It had an unofficial loft conversion complete with proper stairway, radiator and velux windows. However, it had not been done to building regulations. It was obviously inteneded as a young child's playroom due to...

Muslim protesters set fire to Giant Poppy on Armistice Day

Freedom includes the right to do things that other people don't like, even things some may think reprehensible. Where to draw the line on what is allowed and what is not, is a difficult thing to get right. I really am not sure which side of the line this should be.

thinking about doing a semi DIY loft conversion

You say that you have the freeholder's and neighbour's agreement to what you propose. If you decide to go ahead, it would be best to get these agreements in writing before you do anything else. How many people later say, "You misunderstood me, I didn't really agree to all of that", or something...

    paint preservation

This idea of leaving the tin upside down (so that skin is at the bottom when you re-open it) was given to me by a friend years ago. However, I must admit that I've never tried it myself.

    Prison population.

E.U. immigrants are legal but that doesn't mean they should be. This is one of the worst features of E.U. membership, we have to take anyone whether we like it or not.

    Tarmac a Path

I can't help with the price but it might help you (or anyone quoting a price) to know that 50' by 6' by 2" is a little under 2 cubic yards or a little under 1.5 cubic metres.

    Prison population.

Except the courts won't allow them to be deported if they come from a country that might not treat them as well as we do. I also read that one was allowed to stay because he had aids and the home country couldn't cope with it. All this due to orders from the E.U. Time we left!

Fixing architrave and skirting board in place

I presume this was advised because it is easier than a mitre to do and doesn't look too bad. However, a mitre looks better, in my opinion.

    trimming a pine door

Is it a solid pine door? If so then taking more than 5mm off the top or bottom should be OK. It depends on how much you want to take off. I would suggest not more than about one tenth of the solid part above or below the panels. It might also be better to take a little of both top and bottom.

    house insulation?

I reckon cavity wall insulation is worth it. I had our detached bungalow done ten years ago and felt the benefit the next winter without a doubt. I suppose it depends on how many outside walls you've got. Rather than fix plywood over the loft, wouldn't it be cheaper, and just as effective, to...

    prison riot

It has recently been on the news that the re-offending rate for ex-prisoners is about 75% within 12 months. Probably a lot of this is drug related. That is a problem that needs a new approach I saw a T.V. programme a couple of years ago about the military prison at Colchester. The programme...

    University For All ??

I think that's a gross misrepresentation of what Crockett said. Quite correctly, in my opinion, he is saying that some "degrees" (in italics because they aren't really worth that title) are a waste of a students' time, and a waste of taxpayers money if they have to fund them.

    Closing off vents

There is another factor to bear in mind. When we bought our bungalow 13 years ago we had a gas engineer inspect the sitting room fire which we suspected had been a DIY installation. The gas chap immediately condemned it partly because it was too powerful for the room without an airbrick. (There...

    Move upstairs bathroom?

I was thinking about converting our integral garage to a new en-suite bedroom. One problem is that it is on the other side of the bungalow to the present bathroom. I seem to remember reading somewhere that a toilet must not be more than 2m from a stack pipe (or whatever it is called).

    Coat Rack on-going disaster....

That's exactly what I meant by "height of the bracket" not its height from the floor. Perhaps I should have used a different term to make it clearer. However, I thought that my last line would have made the meaning obvious.

    University For All ??

You have to understand that the purpose of school (and to some extent university) in recent years is not to give people a good education but to try to prove that everyone is equal. Everyone is equally important, but that is not the same as saying that they have equal abilities. What people...

    University For All ??

Not if it's genuinely higher education. The point is, that what some young people do in university today, would never qualify as higher eduction as original intended. Yes, many are wasting their time now. What they do will get them nowhere, certainly not where they think it should. I'm afraid...

    University For All ??

Well said Johndug. I know another example of two young men. One went to university, and after doing a few things ended up with a low grade I.T. job. The other went straight into industry and now has a much higher grade of I.T. job and is earning twice as much.
