    Thanks for your replies. I have some Rustin's Metal Lacquer brush on coming tomorrow. I'll give it another careful clean, warm the brass and try the Rustin's. Hopefully it will stay shiny for a long while without needing anything more than a wipe over with a damp cloth.

    This is the plaque in it it's tarnished state and how it looks now (no lacquer). I didn't think to take a pic of the lacquer problem, as at the time I was only concerned with removing it.
