No cupboard around it. I think a local plumber may have been heavy handed with the one, but the other just dropped off when I had to remove the wireless receiver, as mentioned in another post I made on the forum. The glue holding the dial to the shaft looks a bit brittle.

Both of the control dials on our vaillant have separated from the shaft that goes through the control system. Looking at them, they both separated at the same place and look identical at the break. Looking at the board the shafts connect to I don't see how their case design would have...

Thanks Sam. I disconnected the receiver and did as you said. Fired up straight away when set to 1 for the CH dial. I've now set it to timer and it'll do great until tomorrow when I get some new cabling to wire in the receiver once again. Thanks again for a speedy diagnosis technique...
