    Earth checking for grounding

Like RF says the fuse is of no use here. People often think that fuses protect people, they don't they protect the installation. The resistor choice however, could need careful consideration. Note that in the Wiki pointed to by ericmark that it says there are often two resistors. One at...

    Strange welder fault..

Would you ask him to reconnect it and verify that the weld deteriorates again, if he already hasn't. And also what current is he welding at? What make and model of welder is it?

    Ceiling replacement advice please

For sound proofing, mass counts. In my experience a modern 12.5mm plasterboard ceiling is inferior sound wise to an old 40s lathe and plaster ceiling it replaced. Soundproofing boards are usually physically quite heavy. Fireline is too. And also comes in 15mm from memory. Other factors like the...

    Strange welder fault..

If the 20A MCB is staying in then its not pulling more than that. So, if my flat cap is on straight, 6mm will drop about 5v per conductor over 70M. So a total of about 10v at the other end. About 5% on a 240v supply. I don't reckon it's an issue especially when you've confirmed the test piece...

Lectros Osmotic Damp Proofing System Problem

Water? That was the whole reason for trying it  Well no, it was the 2nd. The first was to see what we could cut our way through. You know how it as kids. Or was that just me? But the water was interesting. Seeing if we could get it to crack. Often the results were too catastrophic to...

Lectros Osmotic Damp Proofing System Problem

As regards the science of it..... The wiki for it has some info on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro-osmosis So now, armed with that lot, you no longer need to wait for a full moon to draw the juices up the plants to harvest the fruit. Get your friendly neighbour hood electrician to...

    Strange welder fault..

Is your test piece, that welds okay, on the floor of the workshop or the floor of the barn? Reason for asking is I'm wondering is the welder on a long extension lead? And that's the difference. Different welders cope with mains voltage drops differently. Some other thoughts - You don't say...

Lectros Osmotic Damp Proofing System Problem

Oh definitely Ban. Had great fun with thermite orientated stuff as a kid. Not sure if it was more fun getting them going, or the fruitless attempts at putting them out. :D These days people ask too many questions.

Lectros Osmotic Damp Proofing System Problem

It's nice to hear talk of an electro osmotic damp proof system on the forum. The technique IMO is a much preferable alternative to injection systems and often easier to install. If installed correctly it's very reliable. Sometimes in delicate and or historical buildings you have no choice...

Best consumer unit for fully rcbo install?

Thanks riveralt. I'd seen TTC's post and was having a dig round for a proper picture of it rather than just the one on the front of the website. Or a proper datasheet on it. You click on its product page and all you get is the front of it. I do wish manufacturers would show the insides too...

Best consumer unit for fully rcbo install?

Does anybody have a picture of the inards of the Curve Consumer unit they could put up? How high are they? The Wylex EH range is extra height but it depends on how much room you're looking for. Standard CUs are 230mm high. The EH metal clad range, going by the 506EH I've got here, is 255mm...

Best CU for all RCBOs, domestic install

Do you have a model number of the metal clad ranges that offer more headroom? I have one of the Wylex NHRS range here and its not very good.

I appreciate that Ban. It was the bottom one I was interested in. The top one is just a plastic enclosure with a bit of DIN rail in it.

Best CU for all RCBOs, domestic install

Following the recommendations for MK as a CU with more height I've just been looking at the MK Sentry consumer units on their website. They all seem to be only 230mm or 235mm high. Am I missing something here as RF's picture of the MK one seems to be more roomy than that? Or is the picture of an...

    Odd knife

I would say 'PAT DEC' stands for Patent decision. Google the following terms: "Decisions of the Commissioner of Patents" or "Decisions of the Commissioner of Patents and of the United States" Note the double quotes and include them in a search. The archives seem to be public access...

Lighting circuit - Wiring for upgradeabilty - Smart home

Thanks for that Bernard. Like so many things, once you know the terminology or abbreviations they use, all kinds of things pop up. I've just taken delivery of a few sample terminals and wondered what the middle threaded holes were for. That explains it.

Lighting circuit - Wiring for upgradeabilty - Smart home

Connector block is something I much want to avoid. I don't like connectors where a screw is driven into a soft copper conductor. Although mains plugs etc have used it for years I'm glad to see that breakers and such have made the jump. Hopefully we'll see it sometime on sockets. DIN...
