Close the 2nd line socket was in a better position for using the modem as it gave a better wi-fi to other areas of the house. (a large 4 floored house with solid brick walls) Didn't know until I started this post I could arrange it so they both worked on the same line.

thanks for helping, but done as instructed and there is no dialtone on either line. You seemed so sure I'm wondering if there is a fault on the dropline possibly the Black as nothing works if that is added to any combination.

okay tried that, top row 1-4 as suggested, bottom row using just the wires from 1st installed line I used blue to bottom 1 and orange to bottom 2 this gave me a dialtone and the discontinued line (identified by 1471 and got message "there are no messages for you" and tried to dial another phone...

just a thought but will I need to connect the discontinued line to make the 2nd line connect. as I've removed the wires from the first line completely

Pretty sure the 1st installed line (now discontinued) is white and orange as you suggest. But when I remove the white one I do not get a dialtone at all. neither the black or the Green seem to provide power? like the white one does. Picture won't help much as I've tried just about all...
