Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

I can't remember the last time that happened to me?

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

That's amazing! I wish EVs could tell me how much range I had and nag me if they're getting low! Oh... hang on... they can....

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Yes, hardly anywhere has electricity these days...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

If I'd meant that, I'd have written that... You're still suckered by the "you'll have to spend hours on a charger" BS, because you've never tried it yourself and you don't know any better, but someone on the internet said it and it chimes with your existing prejudices, so you think...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

I doubt it will be much worse than the EV rapid charging companies are ripping us off for? How much are you paying per kWh? A typical rapid charger is around 89p / kWh.

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

I don't do any of those things. I just drive it. I don't make sacrifices when it comes to heating (or aircon, heated seats or even heated steering wheel) - the climate control is set to exactly the same temperatures as in my last ICE car. My work has taken me as far South as Kent and as far...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

And that's an easy one to answer. The electricity comes from the National Grid (which is currently supplying it at 104 grammes of CO2 per per kWh). This being winter, my car is averaging 3 miles to the kWh, so that's 3 miles for 104 grammes of CO2, or 34.7 grammes per mile, or 21.7...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Just like diesels were subsidised by the very VED tax rates we're talking about! :ROFLMAO: I wouldn't mind, if the taxation system was based on weight - but it isn't. It's based on CO2 emissions. Nor has that revenue been ringfenced for road maintenance and building since the 1930s! "hours"...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Do these fields currently have petrol pumps?

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

:ROFLMAO: ok, I'll stop doing 20,000 miles a year in my EV now I know that...;)

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

On the other hand, many EVs (all of which have "0" tailpipe emissions) have been retrospectively hit with £195 tax, whereas some of the filthiest 2001-2017 cars that were taxed for £20-£50 a year, have seen very small increases.

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

EV sales are still rising. Not as fast as the government would like, but ICE car sales are falling.

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

Hasn't happened yet, and the oldest of the current generation of EVs are soon going to be coming up to the average age when an ICE car would be scrapped...

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

ICE cars have been throttle-by-wire for decades now. You're as likely to be immobilised by electronics in an ICE car as in an EV these days. Yet the reality, is that few are.

    Checking Oil level

I think that might have been Slick 50? To be honest though, an ex-colleague had a (virtually scrap) Austin 1100 around the same time. Dropped all the oil out, (without any Slick 50 treatment) and drove it from Blackpool to Preston before it seized.

MOT Emissions fail - thoughts, please?

Well, I guess he could offer them some extra payment for that test method... ;)

MOT Emissions fail - thoughts, please?

I suspect that's the problem - if there's even a brick inside the can! The cheapo aftermarket cat manufacturers know that the MOT test can't even check for NOx, so they leave those expensive chemicals out altogether. I also get the impression they really skimp on the oxidation chemicals too...

    Petrol can

The importer (our gaffer) learned a hard lesson on that one. China can do truly excellent stuff... ...if you pay for it. It can also do really **** stuff, if that's your bag, and it can do it very cheap. You're always raving about how cheap the stuff you buy from China is, aren't you...? ;)

    New check for MOT ?

That's bizarre1 There must be more to this story than meets the eye...

MOT Emissions fail - thoughts, please?

Could I ask for thoughts on the attached, please? Not mine, just trying to help someone out on a Facebook group. 1993 (ish) car with a cat. Lambda is perfect, but HC is a bit high, and CO is very high. The poster said the cat "looked quite new". Recent new plugs and leads. Says the exhaust...
