    Stopcock does not work

I'm going to have to speak to the managing agent tomorrow anyway, we've discovered another (this makes 3!) water source coming into the flat. The new one is in 2" galvanised steel pipe which runs floor to ceiling with one spur coming off it. The spur goes to copper after a (leaking)...

Bottled it today, I measured the pipe at OD 22mm:

    Stopcock does not work

I'm getting a feeling that the majority of people here would recommend hiring an electric pipe freezer rather than relying on cans. Recommendations for a place to hire one from in SE London on a Saturday morning?

    Stopcock does not work

In all seriousness I was going to get the verniers onto the pipe to determine what size it is, then measure between the two compression nuts at either end. The idea of doing this is so that I can get a replacement that is as close as possible to being the same size as the one that is there at...

    Stopcock does not work

I spoke to the freeholder/managing agent this morning, he basically said "best of luck with it", and asked me to make sure the plumber did not spill water everywhere. I'll have a crack at freezing the water main tomorrow and changing the stopcock myself. What could possibly go wrong?

    Stopcock does not work

The chap I spoke to sounded like a decent guy- the £150 was because where I live (SE23) is not his area and he'd have to travel a way. He'd be happy to do half a days work for that money, if I had some more jobs. I would prefer to sort this for less mind!

    Stopcock does not work

I spoke to the managing agent for the block, there is one external stopcock for all 64 flats. It's at the foot of the drive somewhere, under a manhole cover. I also spoke to a plumber about coming to replace the stopcock, he recommended freezing the pipe if possible (£15) and then...

    Stopcock does not work

Ok, I have had a bit more of a poke around. We have two soil stacks it would appear, one that runs down the outside of the building that the two dunnies feed into, and one that runs down the inside of the building that the sink, basin and bath feed into. The pipe from the tank on the roof...

    Stopcock does not work

Ok, great, more than happy to pay that sort of money to make sure I don't fill the flat with water. Best to find the stoptap before calling a plumber, or will a plumber be able to find a stoptap easily when they turn up?

    Stopcock does not work

Ok, I think that this calls for someone with more of a clue than I have- could anyone estimate what a plumber would charge me to replace this with a brand spanking new functional stopcock?

    Stopcock does not work

Ok, so- find external stopcock, and then replace this stopcock? With regards to the number of turns- below picture is of the tap backed off two and a half turns, at which point I wimped out turning it any more:

What hot and cold systems have you got? - We have a SIME combi boiler Do all taps in kitchen/bathroom keep running? - Yes (although the cold tap in the bathroom and the cisterns are fed by a tank on the roof, but I can turn that off) How many turns does the stoptap turn? - Not sure, I'll...

    Stopcock does not work

Ok, great- I will have a go, one question (told you I'd ask some stupid ones!), what is a packing gland?

    Stopcock does not work

This is the fellow: It is currently "closed" as much as possible, not that you could tell that from the water gushing out of the kitchen tap when you turn it on! Adjustables I have, GT85 I have (rather than WD40), reckon I can fix this?

    Stopcock does not work

Hi all, first post so please forgive me if I say something stupid! My girlfriend and I have just moved into our first place- a first floor flat in a 1930's block in Forest Hill, South East London. We had a plumber round to look at the boiler as it was leaking, whilst he was there we asked...
